If you love dogs then there is no chance that you do not love Labradors. They are lovable, very friendly, you want to hug them and shower them with kisses and well their eyes win you over in no time. They were originally fish hunters
A rarely known fact indeed, our adorable Labs were originally fishing folks! They in fact have water resistant double coats that help with the insulation and the short fur prevents them from being dragged down when wet. If you notice, their paws are webbed which help with the swimming speed. When they were brought to England in the 1800s, they eventually were bred as game hunting dogs. If you let them be, you will realise that they are naturally very good in waterflow hunting.
They have endless energy
They have a bad reputation to be super laid back but when they are trained well and made to exercise regularly, you will be amazed how energetic they are. Initially, Labs had the task of running around, swimming and working. If you take them out for brisk walks everyday and feed them only what they need to, you will find a sharper dog in that same pup you thought won’t budge.
Their colour has nothing to do with character
Lab retrievers come in three colours. Golden, black and chocolate brown. The golden one is the most common, then comes black and the brown one is difficult to get. However, it has nothing to do with their individual character. There are many myths going around that golden ones are lazy and black ones are the best hunters, but do not believe them. It is all about how they are trained and taken care of.
Name origin
Did you know that the name Lab retrievers comes not from Labrador but from Newfoundland? Their ancestors were in fact St. John’s water dogs that eventually went extinct.
Tax laws that made them a distinct breed
It was the combination of some newly introduced taxes on dogs in Canada that made Labs distinct. Otherwise, the St. John’s water dogs had gone extinct.
Labs are very fast!
They may look lazy but these bundles of joy have the inborn ability to sprint and can hit 12 miles an hour in just 3-4 seconds!
A black Lab inspired Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog”
If you are a Led Zeppelin fan and have paid attention to their song “Black Dog”, then you must have also noticed that the song has nothing to do with dogs otherwise! The band named the track after a black Lab was spotted wandering around the Headley Grange studio where they were recording the album.
