Aquarium fish that can live for 10 years or more

If you’re setting up your first aquarium and want fish that are both stunning and long-living, then you are at the right place. With the right care and diet, some freshwater fish species can live for 10 years or more — thus offering not only years of beauty to the place where they are kept but also companionship to their owners. While fish keeping is a demanding hobby, it is also greatly rewarding and fulfilling as an experience. And so, here we list some such fish:

2/6

Angelfish

Elegant and graceful, angelfish are one of the most popular freshwater aquarium species. They are known for their unique tall, triangular fins and peaceful nature. With good care-- including water quality, diet and tank space-- they can live up to 10–12 years. While they are generally calm in nature, angelfish can be territorial too. So pair them with peaceful tank mates.

3/6

Goldfish

One of the most popular and a classic freshwater aquarium fish, Goldifhs can live up to 15 years. In some cases, they can live close o 20 years too, with good care and love. While they are beginner-friendly fish, they do need clean water and ample space in the tank to live peacefully which is contary to popular belief of keeping them in small bowls. Goldfish are omnivores and so, they need a balanced diet of pellets, veggies, and the occasional treat to stay healthy.

4/6

Pgymy Corydoras

Pgymy Corydoras, or “Cory cats,” are small bottom dwellers and they help in cleaning the tank naturally, by eating all the leftover foods. They are peaceful in nature, and should be kept in a group of right or more. These fish are known for their grouping behaviour and adorable whiskers. With good care and diet, they live for 10 to 12 years in clean, well-oxygenated tanks.

5/6

Betta fish

One of the most popular freshwater aquarium fish, Betta fish are known forr their vibrant colours and flowing fins. These are hardy fish that can live up to 10 years with proper care and diet— which is far longer than most people expect. Because of their territorial nature, they’re best kept alone or with carefully chosen tank mates that are peaceful in nature.

6/6

Plecostomus (Pleco)

Known as the “algae eater,” the Pleco is a wonderful addition to a freshwater tank and can live 10–15 years or more. These nocturnal fish help keep your tank clean by feeding on algae and leftover food. While small species like the Bristlenose Pleco are ideal for beginners, avoid larger types that outgrow standard tanks. They prefer driftwood, hiding spaces, and moderate lighting. Plecos are low-maintenance, peaceful, and add a unique look to your aquarium with their armored bodies and calm behavior — making them both practical and fascinating long-term tank mates.
