Dog breeds that have short life spans

Dogs are considered a man's best friend, but unfortunately our furry companions don't live forever. While most dogs have an average lifespan of 10 years, there are some breeds that are known to have shorter life spans due to their size, health complications, or breed-specific conditions. Here we list some such beloved pet dog breeds that generally have shorter lifespans:

2/8

Great Dane

Despite their huge size, Great Danes are known for their gentle nature and often called "gentle giants". Their huge size often leads to heart issues, joint problems, and a higher risk of bloating-- all of which can shorten their life expectancy. And so, Great Danes often live only 7–10 years.

3/8

Bernese Mountain Dog

The Bernese Mountain dogs are affectionate and loyal, but their average lifespan is only 6 to 8 years. These cold climate dogs are prone to cancers, hip dysplasia, and immune-related issues, all of which reduces their lifespan.

4/8

Bulldog

English Bulldogs have distinct wrinkled faces which makes them stand apart from others. But they are prone to Brachycephalic syndrome, respiratory issues, and heatstroke-- all of which contribute to their early health decline. And so, their average lifespan is generally only 8–10 years.

5/8

Boxer

Boxers are energetic and affectionate pet dogs, but their life expectancy is just 9–10 years. They are prone to heart conditions like cardiomyopathy, as well as several cancers, especially lymphoma and mast cell tumours.

6/8

Bullmastiff

Powerful and protective, Bullmastiffs only live up to 7 to 9 years. They are prone to various health conditions, including bloat, hip issues, and cancer, all of which contribute to their limited lifespan.

7/8

Saint Bernard

Another gentle giant, the Saint Bernards are friendly pet dog breeds that are suitable for colder climates. But, they generally live for only 8–10 years. Why? Because their size and genetics often make them vulnerable to hip dysplasia, heart problems, and epilepsy, which considerable reduces their life span as compared to other dog breeds.

8/8

Newfoundland

Newfoundland are known for their sweet nature and swimming skills, however, they generally live for only 8–10 years. They often face joint problems, heart disease, and cystinuria— a condition which affects their kidneys, thus impacting their longevity significantly.
