OPEN LETTER: Dear society, my dusky complexion has nothing to do with my success in life

Being beautiful the way you are!

I might sound offensive to many but here’s the blatant truth—Indian society is plagued with stereotypes, especially about gender and skin colour. Well, I am 29 years old, unmarried and most importantly, I have a ‘dusky’ complexion. No matter how much I excel in life, a part of this society will always be concerned (and point fingers!) about my skin tone. To all those who think being ‘fair’ is a matter of pride and gives you an upper hand in life, here’s why you are wrong…

2/6

I am in a happy relationship

While countless people have derided my complexion, my partner finds it beautiful. In fact, his complexion is fair but he has evolved from this so-called label. Love has nothing to do with one’s skin tone, right?

Professional success, if it counts!

Unfortunately, my dusky complexion overshadows my professional success to many. I wish they understood there’s so much more to achieve in life rather than cribbing about what skin tone you are born with.

I make my parents proud

My parents take pride on seeing their daughter independent and doing well in life. My complexion was never a concern for them. Interestingly, I was not even aware about this stereotype while growing up because it never mattered to my parents. It’s the perfect case of parenting done right!

Friendship comes with no conditions

Friends are the family that we choose. My complexion has nothing to do with these relationships that I have built over the years. We girls might crib about zits pimples, tan, et al, but we never judge each other for our complexion.

And yes, I am beautiful

Let’s get this straight—you don’t have to fair to be good looking. The parameters of being beautiful are gradually shifting from skin tone to many other ‘meaningful’ aspects. The focus should be on to be the best version of yourself. You are beautiful the way you are! Period.
