Do you agree?
Gen Z wants to live their life by their own rules but that does that mean marriage means nothing to them? We asked some college students who are also called Gen Z today on what marriage means to them and here is what they told us.
“My world doesn’t revolve around it”
“Marriage is nice, it gives us a sense of belonging and I know this because I see my elder married sister. But, for me, it is not something I think about day and night. My priority at 20 is to become something and keep my heart open when love comes by. I am okay with live-in as well. My parents may hound me for a while but they too are trying to understand the new age where there is more to life than making babies after signing a paper.”

“I want to, but maybe in my 30s”
I definitely want to get married because I believe in the institution but if you ask me to do it while I am in my 20s then there is no way! I am yet to figure out myself, the direction of my life. I have seen how people figure out themselves in their late 30s so marrying another human when I am still navigating my own [personality & goals is stupidity. I will marry when I am clear about what I want from life.

“Marriage is not possible in this country for me”
I am proudly gay and while I am in India, marriage is not something I can even consider if I want to live a peaceful life. Luckily my parents are supportive so I do have my back covered. They encourage me to date men as long as my studies do not suffer. But marriage… I will have to leave this country first… I will happily marry the man worth settling for and age does not matter to me. I may be Gen Z but I relate to old souls.”

“No, thank you”
“For me, marriage is overrated. I have seen so many divorces around me that it is the last thing I want to waste my money, time, and mental peace on. All my 27-year-old sister’s friends had love marriages, my neighbours, and my own parents did. But all of them either got divorced or separated. I don’t see it happening for me at all. No, thank you.”
