Things every family should do to make a new bride feel comfortable

Things every family should do to make a new bride feel comfortable

In India, when a woman marries, she is expected to handle the entire family along with her husband. There are so many terms and conditions and restrictions which are imposed in many households. So, to make a new bride feel comfortable, as she has left her home for you, here are few things you can do.

2/6

Privacy

If you don’t want her to resent you and your family then respect her privacy and space too. Let her be! Respect it if she says she wants to live in another rented place with her husband because not all people are programmed to live in a joint family. Let her follow her own sleep cycle, eating habits etc. Kindly try not to impose a “family time” on her. If you let it be, she may just do these things for you at her own will!

3/6

Career

This whole attitude of “you cannot work after marriage, you earn so less so what is the point” is already very regressive. If she is working and you are going to pass your judgments on her career as well then you seriously have stooped very low. It reflects the fact that you might be literate but certainly not educated! So what do you do? Let her make her own choices and support her! A happy daughter-in-law will never let the apple cart tip!

4/6

Her eating habits

She has left her home for your son and your family. So you must accommodate her choices as well. Ask her what she likes to eat. Make sure that her favourite dish is also there on the table. Don’t make faces if you don’t like it. Share meals. Sharing is caring, remember?

5/6

Clothes

What a woman wears, a daughter-in-law or not, is her decision, her choice. You cannot decide the same for her. She is not deciding for you so how can you? If you do impose these things then do keep in mind that you will certainly have one unhappy member in the house and this could lead to a life-long resentment.

6/6

Calling the family

In many households in India, it has often been observed that the in-laws have an issue when the bride wants to go to her parent’s home or even make a phone call. Instead, encourage her to call and meet her friends and family. There is a life beyond the new family. Ask her to invite them over as well and don’t complain about the noise unless it is a major issue. If it is a problem then politely tell her so. Make the required adjustments from your end as well.
