Radha and Krishna

This mythological couple is the most famous one but how can we not mention them in this list full of love? The love story of Radha and Krishna is a popular and timeless tale. Radha, a cowherd girl, and Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, had a divine and intense love that transcended societal norms and barriers. The couple today has millions of devotees across the globe.

Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal

This iconic love story is associated with the construction of the Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor, built the mausoleum as a symbol of his eternal love for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who passed away while giving birth to their 14th child.

Salim and Anarkali

As per popular belief, Salim, the son of Mughal emperor Akbar, fell in love with Anarkali, a beautiful courtesan. However, their love faced strong opposition from Akbar due to the difference in social status. Despite the hardships, their love story has become legendary and has been immortalized in various artistic forms.

Dhola and Maru

This is a famous love story from Rajasthan. Dhola, a prince, and Maru, a princess, were childhood friends who fell in love. However, Maru was married off to another prince due to political reasons. Dhola, determined to be with Maru, disguised himself and rescued her, leading to their eventual union.

Heer-Ranjha

Heer-Ranjha is another famous Punjabi love story, popularised by poet Waris Shah. It tells the tale of Heer, a Jat girl, and Ranjha, a poor shepherd. Despite belonging to different social classes, they fall in love. However, their families oppose their union, leading to a series of trials and tribulations. The story portrays their undying love and the societal barriers they face.

Baz Bahadur and Roopmati

Baz Bahadur was the last independent ruler of the kingdom of Malwa, while Roopmati was a talented singer and poetess. They met in Mandu, Madhya Pradesh, and fell in love. Roopmati's mesmerising voice enchanted Baz Bahadur, and their love for each other bloomed amidst the scenic beauty of Mandu. However, their story ended tragically when the Mughal emperor Akbar attacked Mandu, leading to their separation.

Mirza-Sahiba

Mirza-Sahiba is a popular love story from Punjab, particularly among the Jat community. It revolves around the forbidden love between Mirza, a Muslim and Sahiba, a Jat princess. Despite being childhood friends, their love is opposed by Sahiba's family, and they face numerous challenges to be together. The story is known for its tragic ending, where Sahiba's betrayal leads to Mirza's death.
