All you need to know about leap year 2024

2024 is the leap year! A leap year consists of 366 days instead of the usual 365 days. After every four years, the month of February gets an additional day that falls on 29th February. The occurrence of the leap year ensures that the calendar remains in sync with the Earth’s orbit around the Sun.

Significance of leap year

The significance of leap year is that Earth’s orbit around the Sun usually takes 365.2425 days whereas our calendar consists of 365 days. Consequently, every four years an extra day which falls on 29th February is added to keep the calendar aligned and prevent seasonal inaccuracies. The origin of the leap year can be traced back to the era of Pope Gregory II who launched the Gregorian calendar in 1582 defining the occurrence of leap year after every four years.
