How to deal with an over friendly neighbour

Here's how you must deal with an over-friendly neighbour

We all have that one neighbour who is nice but goes over the top. The over friendly sorts too get on to your nerves at times but you sometimes do not know how to deal with them. So to sort out those issues, here are a few tips on how to deal with over friendly neighbours.

2/6

Make it quick

If you know that your neighbour has the tendency to dig deep into conversations and they act too nice, just make your conversations short. Don’t volunteer information, just keep it cordial. However, be polite because you have to live with them next door. Excuse yourself after a few minutes with a “you have to be somewhere else”, “you have a deadline to catch up with”, “you have a video meeting with the bosses” etc.

3/6

Reschedule conversations

You are not in the mood to talk to them? It is fine and normal. Since you do have to live with them, once in a while you may have to take out time and chit chat. So, when they ring the bell, you can either not open the door at all and say you were sleeping or not feeling well, or open the door, greet and say that you are in a video meeting and fix a time when you both can sit and chat. Invite them for tea some other time and get over with it later.

4/6

The roommate discussion

Now, when you lie, your roommate, spouse, parents have to be in sync. So let them know what you talked about especially when you know that the nosey and over friendly neighbour can cross question or mention your lie in front of the other members of the house.

5/6

Discourage the food exchange

Some neighbours have this habit of baking and cooking something and bringing it to their neighbours. It is sweet once or twice but when you have to return the favour, it gets annoying. Plus when you do not like them like that then it is important you discourage this habit. Be respectful though because it is indeed a sweet gesture which you happen not to like.

6/6

Drop hints

When you have those forceful tete-tete with them over tea or in the park, just sneakily drop hints that you are not much of a people’s person or very social. Share your schedule and show how tight it is, maybe that will help them understand and tone it down.
