Overwhelmed and feeling low

As humans we all sometimes feel overwhelmed by negative emotions, which is often triggered by stress, challenging circumstances, or struggles in our personal lives. However, learning to navigate and overcome these negative emotions is important for maintaining our mental well-being. Here we explore some ways of dealing with these negative emotions, especially on days when we are feeling low.

2/6

Understanding negative emotions and the underlying cause of it

Negative emotions, like anxiety, anger, sadness, and frustration, can sometimes feel too intense and challenging to handle. Acknowledging how and why you feel these emotions is the first step towards managing them. Sit down with yourself, take some time to identify the specific and reasons behind the emotions you are feeling.

3/6

Practicing mindfulness and self-awareness

Once you have done some self-reflection and understood the reasons behind your emotions, try practicing mindfulness which will help you get some balance in your emotions and life. Mindfulness involves staying present in the moment without judgment. Practice techniques like deep breathing, meditating, observing thoughts and feelings-- all of which can help you create a mental space between you and the negativity. You can also try counteracting your negative thoughts with some positive affirmations, which can bring a shift in your mindset.

4/6

Express yourself

Healthily expressing your emotions is important for releasing pent-up anger and negativity. Go for a walk, spend time in nature or with pets, talk to a trusted friend, family member, or therapist-- all of these could help you with feeling less overwhelmed. Journaling your thoughts is also an effective way of expressing and processing your emotions. It can bring you some clarity of thoughts and contribute to an overall sense of emotional relief.

5/6

Physical activity

Studies suggest that engaging in physical activities like walking, running or going to the gym can boost your mood and alleviate stress. Exercise releases endorphins, our body's natural feel-good hormones, which can help reduce negative emotions.

6/6

Establish healthy boundaries

If your feelings of being overwhelmed often arise from added pressure or responsibilities, try establishing healthy boundaries in your personal and professional life. Learn to say no when it is necessary, and prioritise your self-care and mental health. This will help in creating a balance that can prevent you from becoming too emotionally drained.

If nothing helps and your feelings of being overwhelmed continue then do seek professional help. It is okay to ask for help from a therapists or counselors who can guide you in the right way. Remembering, seeking help to improve your emotional and mental well-being is a sign of inner strength.
