Read about some of the strangest dowries asked

The Supreme Court has recently passed a judgement that any demand made from a bride irrespective of its materialistic nature is considered to be dowry. There is no doubt that asking for dowry is an offence. Women feel immensely insulted when their in-laws pressurise them to give dowry, or else, they eventually face the ultimatum of rejection from the man’s family. Hence, we bring to you some anonymous confessions of women who have shared some obnoxious demands from their in-laws in the name of dowry.

Manipulation for a kidney!

“My boyfriend and I were to wed in a love marriage and we had known each other for five years. He was a good enough person until I tore off his facade during our wedding preparations. His parents wanted me to donate a kidney to the father-in-law since he was dying and also since they had found out that I was the perfect match! Apparently, my boyfriend had done all this without my knowledge. I broke off the wedding upon learning that he only wanted me to marry him so that I could donate his father a kidney! I still shiver at the memory.”

Highest car model

“My in-laws wanted my family to ‘gift’ their son an Audi, a car that I know my family can never afford to buy, especially after all the money went into the wedding preparations. That’s where I drew the line. I had to stand up to them and tell them that their son and I would work hard together to buy an Audi. I had a determination on my face and thankfully, they never said anything after that.”

Memorizing the Quran

“I have been an atheist since the beginning and my boyfriend has respected me for this always. However, when the talks of our marriage came in, his parents strangely asked me to memorise a passage from the Quran. It wasn’t too difficult but this request completely weirded me out. But I did it anyway. I didn’t want to end up with problems with my in-laws.”

Learning to cook

“After hearing that I don’t know how to cook, my mother-in-law stated that I have a time period of one month to finish my cooking course or else, she won’t accept me as her daughter-in-law. I was beyond shocked to hear this and completely ashamed. But I obliged. I learnt how to cook and by the end of the month, my mother-in-law praised me for my cooking skills and told me that I didn’t need to cook at home, but this training was essential for me to handle the house in the absence of her or the maid. I understood her point but she could’ve been gentler about all of this.”

Getting a flat registered

“My in-laws had asked my parents to register a 3-BHK flat in a good society complex under their son’s name. The flat had to be on the 10th floor and in a good society. Mind you, this was all happening without my or my husband’s knowledge. And soon enough, when I got to know about this, I refused to give this dowry and my husband spoke to his parents as well. They blurted out by saying it's for our future and because 10 is their family’s lucky number! Absolutely ridiculous. We didn’t give the dowry.”
