"I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister after the party selects its next leader through a robust nationwide, competitive process. Last night, I asked the president of the Liberal Party to begin that process. This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election," Trudeau said on Monday in a news conference.

Trudeau, the 53-year-old scion of Pierre Trudeau, one of Canada’s most famous prime ministers, enjoyed a brief moment of popularity. However, his approval waned significantly due to rising concerns among voters over issues such as the soaring cost of food and housing as well as surging immigration.

Justin Trudeau’s family
Justin Trudeau is a proud father to his three children - Xavier, Ella-Grace, and Hadrien. He shares his three children with his ex-wife Sophie Gregoire. The former couple welcomed their first child Xavier in 2007. Two years later, in 2009, Ella-Grace was born. After five years, their third child Hadrien was born.

Justin Trudeau has always treasured being a dad. In June 2024, while celebrating Father’s day, he expressed that everything comes after his role as a dad. “My dad was my hero — and he still is. And to Xavier, Ella-Grace, and Hadrien: no matter how exciting or fulfilling this job is, nothing beats being your dad. Love you,” he wrote on social media.

Justin Trudeau’s ex-wife Sophie Gregoire
Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, born in Montreal, Quebec, in 1975 is a retired Canadian television host, public speaker and humanitarian. She married Justin Trudeau in 2005. They met each other while in school. She had been at school with Mr Trudeau's younger brother, Michel. They started dating in 2003 when she was a TV personality. In his 2014 autobiography, Trudeau spoke about the challenges in their marriage, "Our marriage isn't perfect, and we have had difficult ups and downs, yet Sophie remains my best friend, my partner, my love. We are honest with each other, even when it hurts."

Separation
Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire announced their separation in August 2023, 18 years after their marriage. In a statement, Justin said, “Hi everyone, Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate.”

He continued, “As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build. For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy. Thank you.”

Despite the separation, Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire have worked together as a family and even went on family vacations together. After the announcement of the separation, they went on a vacation, and the prime minister’s office said, “Both parents will be a constant presence in their children’s lives and Canadians can expect to often see the family together.”
