7 things a couple can do to save their MARRIAGE before calling it quits

How to save a marriage?

Among the many vows people take during their wedding, this perhaps is the most romantic one—to be together for seven lifetimes through better and worse. However, not everyone is fortunate to keep that promise and they might head separate ways owing to different reasons. But before calling it quits, a couple should try and give their best efforts to save the marriage. So, here are a few things they can do and save the relationship before it takes a turn for the worse.

2/8

Be the first to make a move

Deciding to save a marriage is the easy part, acting upon it is the real challenge. When you know that there are issues, you should make the first move and address it. A lot of couples ignore issues in their marriage thinking the problem will get sorted if they keep quiet or sometimes, they simply fail to address it because they wait for the other person to make the move. But it’s important to sort out differences as soon as they appear and delaying it will only make it grow bigger.

3/8

Stop the blame game

It is a human tendency to pass the buck for one’s mistakes and when it’s about marital disputes between couples, it’s not unusual for a spouse to blame the other for the issues in their relationship. What you need to understand is playing the blame game can only ruin the already thin chances of amending those mistakes. So, the first thing you need to do is accept your mistakes and try not to repeat the same again.

4/8

Be a good listener and observer

Problems in married life arise when you stop being a listener. Do you listen to what your spouse tells you or you just hear and forget about it? Knowing the difference between ‘listening’ and ‘hearing’ can bring a big change in your life. Similarly, you need to be a good observer as well and know what your partner needs and wants even before the person tells you about it.

7

Avoid negative self-talk

A lot of times, you may not criticise your spouse openly because you might be bashing him or her inside your mind. This kind of negativity towards a spouse can only aggravate the problems in your already shaky married life. According to experts, harbouring any kind of negativity for a person can impact the relationship adversely. If you have a problem, talk about it and sort it out.

6/8

Kindness can heal any wound

When you are going through a difficult time, you should believe in the power of kindness. Random acts of kindness or little gestures of love like buying your spouse’s favourite flowers while returning home from the office or cooking your partner’s favourite dish for dinner can go a long way to remind each other about the love you share. During a breaking point, such gestures can reinstate your faith in love and give you the much-needed encouragement to sort out differences.

7/8

Take a neutral opinion

During any dispute between two people, it’s always wise to seek an opinion from a neutral party. Same holds true for spouses as well. But make sure that the person whose opinion you want to seek is not a common friend or family member because they would not be able to give an unbiased opinion then.

8/8

Be patient

We live in an age where getting a divorce is no longer as difficult as it was considered a few decades back. Sadly, this seems to have a negative influence on people and they don’t mind jumping the gun during difficult times and look for easy ways to end their troubles. What most forgets is that they need to be patient because acting in a rush during testing times can only aggravate the situation. So, be patient and keep calm, and face the adversity with confidence.
