5 stages of love and why many stop at the third stage

Do you too get stuck at this stage?

The idea of "stages of love" is a concept that has been discussed and theorized by various psychologists and relationship experts. While there are different theories, there is one of the most commonly applied theories here. Scroll down to know more about it.

2/7

Infatuation/lust

This initial stage is about intense physical attraction and a strong desire for emotional and sexual connection. It has everything to do with the release of hormones and neurotransmitters, creating a "honeymoon phase" where partners feel infatuated with each other.

3/7

Falling in love/romantic love

This stage involves the development of a deeper emotional connection, where individuals experience a sense of attachment. It is marked by the desire for emotional intimacy, increased communication, and the exploration of shared interests and values.

4/7

Relationship settling/attachment

In this stage, the initial passion and excitement start to settle, and a more stable and committed bond is formed. Partners establish a sense of security, trust, and mutual understanding. This stage often involves deeper emotional attachment and the building of a solid foundation for the relationship.

5/7

Disillusionment/conflict

At this stage, the initial view of the relationship starts fading, and partners begin facing challenges and conflicts. Differences in personality, values, and expectations create tension and disagreements. Many couples struggle to navigate these conflicts which leads to feelings of dissatisfaction and disillusionment.

6/7

Mature love/companionate love

If couples successfully navigate the previous stage, they may reach a stage of mature love. This stage is about a deeper understanding and acceptance of each other's flaws and imperfections. Partners develop a sense of companionship, mutual respect, and a long-term commitment to supporting each other's growth and well-being.

Reasons why people stop at the 3rd stage

All the stages of love have their beauty but many couples end it at the third stage. Here are some reasons why that may be happening.

Unrealistic expectations

Some people enter a relationship with overly romanticised expectations and idealisations. When that infatuation fades and reality sets in, they may become disillusioned and decide to end the relationship.

Lack of effective communication

Communication is crucial in resolving conflicts and navigating challenges. If partners are struggling to communicate their needs, desires, and concerns effectively, conflicts can escalate, leading to a breakdown in the relationship.

Fear of vulnerability and intimacy

Some individuals may struggle with emotional intimacy or fear being vulnerable in a committed relationship. This fear prevents them from progressing to the later stages of love, where a deeper emotional connection is required.

Incompatibility

Despite the initial attraction and connection, couples realise their significant differences in values, goals, or lifestyles as the relationship progresses. These incompatibilities can make it challenging to sustain the relationship beyond the third stage.

External factors

External factors like career demands, family pressure, or geographic distance can also strain a relationship and make it difficult to progress to the later stages.
