Rising divorce cases in India

Over the years, the number of divorce cases in India has increased significantly. From shifting gender norms to exceptionally high expectations from one's spouse, the reasons for the rising number of divorces in India are many. Here we list down some very bizarre reasons why Indians have filed for divorce and some of these will surely make you question the world we live in today. Read on to know more.

Because the wife only cooked Maggi everyday

In a bizarre incident, a man from Karnataka's Ballari once filed a divorce from his wife. His reason: His wife didn't know how to cook well. So much so that she would end up cooking and serving him Maggi for breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. This irked the man so much that he filed for a divorce from his wife. Eventually, the couple got divorced on the grounds of mutual consent.

For being allowed to eat only laddus

In 2019, a bizarre incident of a couple from Uttar Pradesh's Meerut came to light when a man approached the family court to seek divorce from his wife of 10 years. The reason: The man claimed that his wife was following a tantrik and under his guidance she did not allow him to eat anything else apart from laddus! The man said that his wife gave him four laddus in the morning and four laddus in the evening each day, and didn't offer him any other food. His wife also did not let him eat anything else, but laddus daily. Fed up with her behaviour, the man decided to end his 10-year-long marriage with his wife.

When your spouse loves you too much

While every couple wishes to live a happy and peaceful married life together, this didn't seem true for one weird couple from Uttar Pradesh in India. Yes, you read that right! In a bizarre incident, in 2020 a woman from UP's Sambhal district went to the Sharia court seeking divorce from her husband. Her reason for divorce was that her husband was too sweet to her and didn't fight with her! In the woman's words, her husband 'loved her too much'. However, listening to her reason, the cleric refused to grant her a divorce after which the woman even went to the local panchayat with her plea. Well, looks like nobody knows what women want!

5/6

Because the man was too focused on clearing the UPSC exams

In 2019, a woman from Bhopal, India, moved to the local family court seeking a divorce from her husband. Her husband's fault was that he was so focused on his studies for the UPSC that he didn't give her any time or attention. Neither did he spend time with her nor did he visit his own relatives as he was too consumed in his preparations for the UPSC exams. The situation came to light when a family counselling session was held for the couple at Bhopal's District Legal Service Authority.

For being unhygienic

In a recent incident which has emerged from Uttar Pradesh's Agra, a woman has sought divorce from her husband after just 40 days of their marriage. The reason: The woman has alleged that her husband has poor hygiene due to which he has a strong body odour, reported India Today. On being questioned by the family counselling centre, the man admitted to bathing only once or twice a month and sprinkling Ganga jal on himself once every week instead. In his defence, he even said that on his wife's insistence, he bathed six times in the 40 days of his marriage! On the police's intervention, the man has agreed to have better hygiene and bathe daily but his wife is refusing to get back with him. The couple have been asked to try and reconcile by the counselling centre on September 22, 2024.
