How to deal with jealous co-workers

Do you see envy written large on your colleague’s face whenever your manager appreciates your work? Or, your progress did not go down well with your co-workers when you got recently promoted? Well, it is safe to assume that you are presently a not-so-liked member in your team and your workplace might have a negative work environment. Instead of fretting about being given cold shoulders by others or damaging your professional relationships, here are some simple-yet-smart tips on how to deal with the situation.

2/8

Stay diplomatic

Your colleagues might start ignoring you intentionally when you are in the good books of your boss. You need to hold your calm and opt for a diplomatic approach to stop the situation from getting worse. Try to be a part of the team and engage in conversations with them. Have a friendly attitude and maintain a good relationship with everyone.

3/8

Think before you speak

Since there is a high probability that you would be the centre of all the gossips, make sure you refrain from gossiping about others. Listen to everyone, take your time to process the information and react accordingly. You never know how your colleagues tweak whatever you say and use it against you.

4/8

Keep the communication formal

When it comes to work, it is a good idea to document everything. Let everyone know that you prefer all communications over emails and if required, keep your senior in the loop. It would let your work speak for yourself, and you can always raise your concern when you are being targeted for no reason or being overburdened with work.

5/8

Try keeping a low profile

Being less conspicuous help in dealing with jealous employees. If you are happy because you have got an amazing project to work on, a good bonus or an appreciation letter, you do not need to announce it to the world, especially your colleagues. Try controlling your excitement and super-happy face, and instead face your co-workers with a confident and polite smile.

6/8

Teach, not preach

You will only complicate the situation if you go on a preaching spree with your colleagues. It is a good practice to extend a helping hand to your co-workers but it must not sound that you are trying to teach them the basics or lecturing them on how to do their work. Present your point of view as a piece of advice and let them make the choice of following it or not.

7/8

Don’t brag

We are sure you have worked really hard to achieve your professional milestones but bragging about it, especially in front of your colleagues, is surely a terrible idea. Do we need to explain why? Also, don’t blow your own trumpet on social media and share this news only with those who would be actually happy to listen to it.

8/8

Remember this!

Such ups and downs are a part and parcel of any professional life. In fact, office politics exist in every workplace. What is important is to stay focused on your work and keep climbing the corporate ladder. Also, it is equally important to speak up if any of your colleagues are turning hostile and the matter is going out of your hand.
