Are dating apps only for hook ups?

Finding love in the online world!

Dating apps have got a not-so-good reputation for being the hub of people looking for hook ups, casual relationships or adding some spice in their love lives. But contrary to what is believed, many people have had different experiences while using such apps and sites, and many ended up making friends, strengthening their professional networks and meeting interesting people. We asked seven users about their experiences in this virtual world of dating, here’s what they shared.

He is getting married now

“I made my account on a dating app out of curiosity and started talking to the first guy I matched. Soon, we realised we don’t have romantic feelings for each other but can be great friends. We have been in touch since three years and he recently invited me to his marriage. His girlfriend, who is now his fiancé, also knows about our story!”

I strengthened my professional network

“I have a start-up of dog products and I use dating apps to get in touch with potential customers and strengthen my professional network. I have met people from different professional backgrounds who have either helped me in promoting my business, buying my products or helping me at the time of need. Recently, I needed someone to write an article for our website and one of my friends whom I met on a dating app pitched in for help.”

I found my wife on a dating app

“Honestly, I was active on a dating app during my college days and was looking for a casual relationship. Interestingly, I met a girl who also studied in the same university and we fell for each toward. Fast forward to four years, we are married since eleven months and have a beautiful life.”

Dating apps help to improve your knowledge base

“I am not joking! If used in the right way, dating apps are a great tool to improve your knowledge levels. I look for people who belong to different and interesting professional backgrounds and chat with them to understand their life experiences. Recently, I met a professional poker player (I did not even know that it was even a legal profession!) and he shared about his last tournament experience. It was amazing!”

It has helped me to increase my number of followers on Instagram

“I am a photographer and I have linked my Instagram account with my profile. Interestingly, I have met people (and eventually became good friends with some) who have the same inclination towards photography and it has turned out to be a good platform to increase my number of followers on Instagram.”

7/8

I almost got duped

“I fell in love with a girl I met on a dating app and soon we started dating. Within a few weeks, I observed her behaviour had become a little weird and she frequently ordered me to pay her phone bills, and take her out to extravagant cafes. One day, I asked her if we could start splitting the bills and it has been over a week, she hasn’t replied to my texts or calls.”

8/8

I think, yes!

“I have been active on a dating app since past four months and I am yet to find someone who is looking for something meaningful. Many people are looking for a rebound or casual relationship; others are just using it to pass their time.”
