7 childhood lessons that we MUST unlearn in adulthood

Do we need to unlearn some of our parents’ teachings?

Parents are, perhaps, our first role model and teachers. In many Indian households, parents’ decision or teachings are never questioned and a child grows up believing everything that his or her parents teach. But are parents always right? Let’s read some has to say:

2/8

Choose your company wisely

"Our parents make us believe that caste, creed, academic status, temperament etc. make a huge difference. And that's why we are told that being friends with a low grader will make us score less and being with a bossy friend will damage our sensibilities. This is absolute hogwash."

Good girls do not drink

“I vividly remember what my mother said about girls who drink. According to her, such girls are immoral and would never find a good husband! I wish I could confess to them that I enjoy drinking. As far as I can take care of my safety and health—there’s nothing wrong in it.”

God exists!

“I belong to a religious family and my parents always made me believe in the existence of God. I was taught all rituals and traditions at a very young age, and was even asked to be afraid of God. I wish I was given the choice to explore this subject of God and religion myself. I became an agnostic in my twenties, and still respect other’s religious sentiments.”

Pre-marital sex is a sin

“My mother said that pre-marital sex is a sin, and one should be a virgin till she gets married. I realised it quite late that the whole concept of virginity is ridiculous. It has nothing to do with my loyalty towards my husband, nor does it define my character”

Marriage makes you complete

“Oh, I think my parents told me the biggest lie—marriage makes your life complete. I am 35 years old and single, and guess what, my life is totally ‘complete’.”

7/8

Be friends with intelligent kids

“This is quite funny, but I spent my school days only mingling with the toppers because my parents said so. My father forbade me to make friends with children who were academically poor. I even broke up with my best friend because my parents didn’t approve of her. She wasn’t a bright kid but was very creative. Today, she is doing really well in her career and we, the so-called ‘intelligent’ kids, are just mediocre professionally.”

Parents are always right!

“I grew up listening to this—whatever we say is always right! Parents are surely our well-wishers but the blatant truth is they might not always give the best advice. You have to take your own decisions sometimes, and it is okay if it differs from their ideal scenario.” (Images: Shutterstock)
