GK Fact of the Day: 7 animals that can survive without water for long

Water is an essential component that is required to sustain life. However, several animals have devised remarkable methods of surviving in dry environments where water is extremely scarce. These methods include retaining water, storing water within the body, and acquiring sufficient fluid through diet rather than regular consumption. Here are seven such animals.

2/8

Camel

The Camel is best-known for its ability to survive without water for weeks. It stores fat in its hump, which converts into energy and moisture. Camels also reduce water loss by producing concentrated urine and tolerating dehydration better than most animals.

3/8

Kangaroo Rat

The Kangaroo Rat has the amazing ability to survive its entire lifetime without water. The moisture requirement is met through the consumption of seeds alone, and its kidneys retain maximum water while being active only during nighttime hours.

4/8

Thorny Devil

The Thorny Devil lives in dry areas where it manages to hydrate itself through the skin. Small channels on its skin direct the collected dewdrops and rainfall toward its mouth. Generally, it can survive without water for months.

5/8

Giraffe

The Giraffe can go long stretches of time without drinking water. They receive most of their water needs through the vegetation they consume. Their body is also capable of retaining water efficiently, making it ideal for arid savannas.

6/8

Desert Tortoise

The Desert Tortoise is capable of living without water for many months. This reptile stores water in its bladder which it uses when necessary. It also remains in its burrows during droughts to conserve water and protect itself from excessive heat.

7/8

Jerboa

The Jerboa is a tiny jumping mammal that lives in the desert. Similar to the kangaroo rat, it seldom consumes water, surviving through the water content in its diet. It is nocturnal and has evolved kidneys that help in conserving water effectively.

8/8

Sand Gazelle

The Sand Gazelle does not drink water for an extended period. It gets its water content from desert plants, and it can withstand extreme body temperatures. This helps in avoiding sweating, conserving water in the process.

These animals are perfect examples of how nature can adapt itself to extreme conditions. Using their unique physiology and behavior patterns, these animals can survive long periods without direct water intake.
