The most common dreams during pregnancy and what they mean

Dreaming is a natural and healthy part of the sleeping process. However, you may notice a difference in the frequency and types of dreams you have during pregnancy. Most women report to recall more of their dreams, excessive vivid dreams, and even suffer from nightmares during this phase. This isn’t anything abnormal and hence here's the information you need to know about all those pregnancy dreams and changes, as well as the reason for their occurrence, in order to combat it or remain stress-free.

2/7

Dreaming frequency

It is possible that a pregnant woman is dreaming more than a normal person in an 8-hour sleep cycle. Such an immediate increase is due to sleeping or napping more hours per day. Pregnancytakes a huge toll on the body and its energy levels causing fatigue and drowsiness. The more you sleep, the more likely it is that you will dream. Hence there isn’t anything to worry about even if you’re facing this problem.

3/7

Vivid dreams

Some people have vivid dreams when they are sleeping deep. This can involve dreams with strong, deep emotions and vivid visuals, which may make it appear as though the events are truly occurring. While anyone might have vivid dreams, it appears that pregnant women have more of them. Rather than blurry visuals that are difficult to pull together, these dreams appear to be real. You may require a moment to discern between the dream and reality when you wake up from these dreams.

4/7

Motherhood dreams

Pregnancy makes you naturally ecstatic to welcome the newest member of your family. Such excitement, and perhaps a little nervousness can eventually lead to dreaming about motherhood and your baby. Surprisingly, this can include having dreams about your baby already being born or having dreams about holding your baby. Some women also have dreams about their baby talking to them, about naming their baby, and about their baby's gender.

5/7

Anxiety dreams/ Nightmares

Dreams can provide insight into some of your most pressing concerns and anxieties. This could be financial concerns, juggling life with a newborn and other children, or planning to evolve with a newborn. You may even be concerned about labour and delivery. With so much on your mind, it's natural for your brain to tap into your worries, and for dreams to highlight your anxieties and fears. Provided pregnancy related nightmares are also very common. This could be fear or anxiety about labour and delivery, or it could be something wrong with the baby. If you've had a miscarriage in the past, you might have nightmares about it happening again. Dreams about being lost or trapped are also common during pregnancy. These kinds of dreams are common, but they are also disturbing and inconvenient. So henceforth be positive and think about good things. You can even take help of yoga or meditation in order to calm yourself.

6/7

Why is there a change in dreaming pattern during pregnancy?

There are countless reasons for changes in dreams during pregnancy. And, as you might expect, hormonal changes play a significant role. Hormone fluctuations during pregnancy can have a significant impact on your body and can even lead to mood related problems or intense fatigue. However, repetitive anxiety-related dreams and nightmares during pregnancy could be a coincidence, or it could be your brain's way of expressing fear. Often, a disruption in sleep patterns can sometimes cause a shift in dreams. Hence below are some tips to combat such dream-related issues.

7/7

Tips to combat dream-related issues

Be positive and keep negative thoughts at bay. Take help of yoga, meditation or any therapeutic practice to calm yourself.

Talk about your feelings with family members or friends, they can help you realise that your worries are normal. Be honest and open about your unpleasant dreams this way you can reduce the frequency of these types of dreams.

A change in dreams can sometimes be triggered by a disruption in sleep patterns. To combat this, try to stick to a sleep schedule and take action to get enough rest.
