​He has been appointed as the 50th Chief Justice of India​

Justice DY Chandrachud has been appointed the 50th Chief Justice of India. In other words, he will be the head of the top court of the country, the Supreme Court of India.

As the CJI, Justice Chandrachud will be responsible for allocation of cases and appointment of constitutional benches.

​Who can be a CJI?​

An Indian citizen, who (a) have been for at least five years a Judge of a High Court or of two or more such Courts in succession or (b) have been for at least ten years an advocate of a High Court or of two or more such Courts in succession, or (c) be, in the opinion of the President, a distinguished jurist is appointed as the CJI.

The Chief Justice of India along with other judges of the Supreme Court are appointed by the President of India.

​Justice Chandrachud will take oath on November 9​

Justice DY Chandrachud will take oath as the Chief Justice of India on November 9.

"In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon'ble President appoints Dr. Justice DY Chandrachud, Judge, Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 9th November,22," Union Law minister Kiren Rijiju said in a tweet on October 17.

​His full name is...​

The full name of the 50th CJI is Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud. He was born on November 11, 1969 in Mumbai and is an alumni of Harvard University, Delhi University, St. Columba's School, St Stephen's College, and Faculty of Law, University of Delhi.

​His father was the 16th CJI of India​

As per media reports, Justice DY Chandrachud's father, Justice Yeshwant Vishnu Chandrachud was the 16th CJI of the country. He was appointed as Chief Justice of India on February 22, 1978 and served for more than 7 years.

Justice Chandrachud will succeed the 49th CJI of the country, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit.


Justice Lalit served as the CJI for a brief period of 74 years.

He is also a former Judge of the Bombay High Court. He served there from March 2000 to October 2013.
