​India’s immunization program covers vaccination for several diseases​


Vaccination is a critical component of healthcare for newborns in India, as it helps protect them from several potentially life-threatening diseases. The immunization schedule in India is designed to provide timely and comprehensive protection against these illnesses. Here's a detailed overview of the vaccines typically given to infants and babies in India:

​BCG (Bacille Calmette-Guérin)​


This vaccine is given at birth or as early as possible till one year of age. It protects against tuberculosis, which can affect various organs, including the lungs. This intra-dermal vaccine is given in the upper left arm in infants.

​Hepatitis B vaccine​


This vaccine is given at birth or as early as possible within 24 hours, , along with BCG and OPV (oral polio vaccine). It provides protection against hepatitis B, a viral infection that affects the liver. This vaccine is usually given in the mid thigh region.

​OPV (Oral Polio Vaccine)​



Polio vaccine is given at birth within 15 days and repeated in subsequent doses-at 6 weeks, 10 weeks & 14 weeks. It protects against polio, a viral disease that can cause paralysis. It is given orally (2 drops).

​Pentavalent vaccine​



This vaccine is given in multiple doses at 6 weeks, 10 weeks and 14 weeks till the age of 1 year. It provides protection to a child from 5 life-threatening diseases – Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenza b (Hib). This vaccine is given at mid-thigh region.

​IPV (Inactivated Polio Vaccine)​



The first dose of this vaccine is given at 6 weeks and is administered in a series of doses at 10, and 14 weeks. It provides additional protection against polio. It is given in the right upper arm.

​Vitamin A dose​


Babies who have completed 9 months are given vitamin A first dose orally. The subsequent doses from 2nd to 9th are given in every 6 months till the age of 5, starting from the age of 1.5 years.

​Measles​



Measles vaccine is given to kids after they complete 9 months. This vaccine is given on the right upper arm. Second measles vaccine is given when the baby is 16 months old.

​Japanese Encephalitis vaccine​


JE vaccine is given to kids who have completed 9 months and are less than 1 year. It is given on the left upper arm. The second dose is given when the kid is between 1.5 to 2 years of age.

​DPT shots​



Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis Vaccine is given when kids are above 1.5 years of age. It is given on the mid-thigh region. DPT booster 2 is given to kids aged 5-6 years on the upper arm.
