Pollution and its impact on eyes

As the world becomes more industrialised, air pollution has become a significant health concern. The rise in air pollution has led to an increase in respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, but it also poses a threat to your eyes. The effects of air pollution on your child’s eyes are also detrimental as studies have shown that exposure to pollutants can lead to dry eyes, eye irritation, and even vision loss. Here are six tips to keep your kids’ eyes healthy during the rise in air pollution.

2/6

Limit the child’s exposure to air pollution

One of the best ways to protect your eyes from air pollution is to limit your exposure. If possible, avoid areas with high levels of air pollution, such as busy streets or construction sites.
If your child has to be in a polluted environment, try to help them stay indoors as much as possible. When your child goes outside, ask him to walk on the side of the street that is farthest from traffic, and avoid exercising or running in polluted areas. Using air purifiers may be a good way too.

3/6

Wear protective eyewear

One of the best ways to protect your child’s eyes from air pollution is to make them wear protective eyewear. Sunglasses with UV protection can help prevent damage to your eyes from the sun's rays, while goggles or safety glasses can provide protection from airborne particles.

4/6

Keep your eyes hydrated

Dr. Neha Kapur, Consultant - Cornea, Refractive Surgery and Anterior Segment, Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital, Daryaganj says, “Air pollution can cause dry eyes, which can lead to discomfort and even vision loss. To prevent dry eyes, make sure your child drinks plenty of water and avoids caffeine, which can dehydrate your body. You can also use child safe artificial tears or eye drops to help lubricate your eyes. These products can help relieve dryness and irritation caused by air pollution.

5/6

Prevent them from rubbing their eyes

If your child rubs his eyes, this can worsen eye irritation and inflammation. Instead of rubbing your eyes, ask them to try blinking frequently to help clear away any pollutants that may have landed on your eyes.Lubricating eye drops can be used to relieve the same.

6/6

Eat a healthy diet

A healthy diet served to children can help protect their eyes from the effects of air pollution. Foods rich in antioxidants, such as leafy greens, berries, and nuts, can help protect your eyes from oxidative stress caused by air pollution.
