Apart from studies, there are several other things kids should know

Apart from studies and academics, there are several other things parents should teach their kids and the earlier they start teaching their kids about it, the better it is for both of them.

A child's mind is like a blank canvas, whatever is put on that the child believes it and tries to follow it. This is why elders always advise parents to inculcate good manners to kids from childhood itself.

A child should know about a balanced life where social, economic and financial aspects are properly synchronized.

2/8

The transition from school to college

The transition from school to college is a crucial phase for kids. This is the time they move out from a closed, more disciplined life to another phase where they can make their own rules and live by it. College life gives kids the independence which they have been longing for since a very long time. Irrespective of who you are or how your attitude towards life is, college life gives every child a taste of liberty. Therefore, it is very important for parents to give the right education to kids during this stage.

3/8

Do not simply focus on education

Yes, education is important and is far more important in colleges than it was in school, but entirely focusing on education neglects the other dimensions.

In order to give the right values to the kid, you need to be a friend first. Talk to your child about his or her college life; talk about friends, teachers, canteen, and everything along with education.

4/8

Give them a lesson on finance

It's time your child knows about finance management. Every college going kid should know how to spend their pocket money wisely.

Finance is a very important lesson for kids, but unfortunately in many households it is considered a mature and elderly topic only. Young kids are never told about finances and when their demands exceed the financial limits of the parents they are shushed down harshly.

5/8

Teach them cooking

Irrespective of the gender, teach your child the basic cooking skills. Cooking is a life survival skill and everybody should be aware of it. It is very important for every person to not just know how to cook, but to also know about the hygienic aspects of cooking.

6/8

Tell them to clean their room

Do not clean your child's room anymore. Now that your child is in college, he or she should know about cleaning rooms. Teach them that waking up early and tidying the bed is the first task of discipline. And there is nothing better way to start the morning than this!

7/8

Teach them to do their laundry

This is another thing, kids should stop depending on their parents. Teach them how to do their laundry and ask them to fix a laundry date as per their own convenience.

8/8

Encourage them to adopt healthy lifestyle habits

Very often kids neglect their health immediately after leaving school. Prolonged screen time, waking up till late at night, sleeping till late in the morning and leading a sedentary lifestyle become their habits.

While in the initial days these habits will not put any effect on the child, but in the long run they may have damaging effects on the physical and mental health of the child. Therefore parents should always teach their kids not to leave the healthy practices.
