Read about this unique parenting style

An 18-year-old boy, Stanley Zhong has defied expectations by securing a job as a software engineer at Google, despite facing rejections from 16 out of 18 colleges, including prestigious institutions like MIT and Stanford. What sets Stanley apart isn't just his technical knowledge, but the unique parenting approach taken by his father, Nan Zhong.

Navigating the path to google

Stanley's journey to Google began five years ago when he launched RabbitSign, a startup that caught the attention of a Google recruiter, as reported by CNBC. However, due to his age, he couldn't be considered at the time. It was only after reaching out again, prompted by an Amazon Web Services recruiter, that Stanley found himself back in the interview process and eventually landed the role at Google.

A hands-off parenting approach

Stanley's father, Nan Zhong, a software engineering manager at Google, attributes his son's success to a "hands-off" parenting approach. Instead of imposing expectations, Nan allowed Stanley to explore his passions freely. "If there’s anything Stanley wants to explore, we are there to provide help," Nan stated to CNBC. The focus is on providing resources and support while letting Stanley determine his own path.

From chess prodigy to tech whiz

Nan illustrates the hands-off approach with Stanley's early experiences in chess. Despite excelling and even winning the Washington State Championship at age 6, Stanley surprised everyone by retiring from the sport. Nan respected his son's decision, emphasising the importance of letting children pursue their passions and providing the necessary resources for their chosen path.

Preparation for moments of luck

Nan sees part of his role as a father as preparing Stanley for moments of luck. Encouraging self-motivation, resilience, and fostering a sense of importance beyond achievements are key elements. Nan's efforts align with research by Jennifer Breheny Wallace, marking the significance of raising "healthy strivers" — children who are self-motivated and don't tie their worth solely to accomplishments.

Advocating for transparency in admissions

When faced with numerous college rejections, Nan took a proactive stance by advocating for more transparency in the university admissions process. He highlights the frustration parents feel and the sense of being left in the dark when decisions are unclear. Nan's efforts reflect a commitment to supporting children through setbacks and promoting strength.
