Important life skills your kids should know before they leave home

Preparing them for life ahead

Is your kid all grown-up and ready to move out of the house, say, for college, work, or marriage? Moving out is a huge step, both for the parents as well as for their children. Whether your daughter or son is an 18 year old moving out for further studies or ready to start a life with their partner, there are some essential skills they should be adept at by now.

In other words, these skills are necessary to lead an independent life. Depending on your parenting style, you may choose to teach some of these sooner and some later. The idea is to enable them to be able to look after themselves as they grow up. Here are some of these must-know life skills:

2/6

Basic cooking skills

If your child is not interested in cooking, they should still at least know some basic cooking skills, apart from making instant noodles. This comes regardless of their gender. If they have no idea how to cook, they might end up ordering more food from outside, which can wreck their budget as well as lead to weight gain and increase risks of other health problems associated with eating too much junk or processed food.

3/6

Money management skills

Learning how to manage their money and budget is an essential part of growing up, whether they are a student who survives on pocket money or have started working and manage some or all of their expenses from their salary.

Money management can be easy or difficult, based on your child’s perception of money. Make sure they know how to live within a budget and understand the risks of using credit irresponsibly.

4/6

Personal healthcare

When fresh out of home, your child may feel helpless if they are dependent on your care whenever they fall sick. In order to avoid them from panicking, ensure they already know how to self-diagnose simple illnesses and not ignore their symptoms. They should also know how to check their own temperature. They should also have a basic knowledge of which over-the-counter medications to take for which symptoms.

5/6

Essential domestic skills

By now, your son or daughter should know how to maintain and manage basic household chores. Keeping their room or apartment clean, doing laundry, buying groceries and dealing with small household emergencies are some of the essential tasks they should be able to manage on their own.

6/6

Being a good judge of character

As they start living on their own, your child will go to new places and meet lots of new people. Since you may not be as around as before to monitor or judge their friends and other people they interact with, it is best to prepare them in advance to be a good judge of character. They should not be too naive and should be smart enough to know who to befriend and who to avoid.
