Bullying is not addressed properly

Kids are bullied and sadly, they find it difficult to speak about it to their parents and elders. As parents it is our responsibility to understand the signs of bullying in kids and take preventive steps before it causes irreversible damage to the mental health of the child.

2/7

Emotional changes are visible

If your child's mood shifts drastically, with frequent episodes of sadness, anger, or irritability, it could be a sign of emotional distress resulting from bullying. A bullied child hesitates to talk about their day or school experiences or even about their friends which most of the kids love to do otherwise. They may isolate themselves from friends and family.

3/7

Do not ignore unexplained injuries

Frequent injuries like bruises, scratches, or torn clothing without a reasonable explanation can indicate physical bullying. Also, bullying can lead to stress and anxiety, which may manifest as physical complaints like headaches, stomachaches, or nausea.

4/7

When your kid’s grades start dropping

If your child's academic performance suddenly drops, it may be due to the emotional toll of bullying, as they may struggle to concentrate and complete schoolwork. A child who is being bullied may attempt to avoid school to escape their tormentors, leading to increased absenteeism.

5/7

When your child does not like going out with friends

A bullied child may lose friends or stop engaging in social activities they once enjoyed. Bullies often target their victims' social connections to increase their isolation. Children who experience bullying may develop social anxiety, making it challenging for them to interact with peers. These kids exhibit significant fear or anxiety about attending school.

6/7

When your child gets more aggressive or defensive

Sometimes, a bullied child may become more aggressive or defensive in response to their victimization. A bullied child may exhibit signs of low self-esteem, expressing self-doubt and negative self-talk. Victims of bullying often blame themselves for the mistreatment, believing they somehow deserve it. Some bullied children may exhibit behaviors typical of a younger age as a coping mechanism.

How to help your child

The first and foremost step is to sit with your child and ease them so that they open up about their problems. Do not threaten them or force them to reveal about their experiences. Take time and let them calm down and talk about it. Seek guidance from experts on how to counsel your child if he or she is bullied. Speak to their teachers and close friends about the incidents so that you get a clear idea about where the issue lies.
