How to raise children with a growth mindset?

What’s a growth mindset?

A growth mindset is when we think that, regardless of age, we can get smarter and more capable with time and effort. Encouraging a growth mindset in kids is important, as it teaches them that intelligence and abilities can be improved with effort. This belief is more valuable than thinking skills are innate and unchangeable.

What should we teach the children?

Vijay Kumar Agarwal, Education specialist, Co- Founder, Makoons Play Schools says, “Children should be taught to embrace challenges and learn from failures, which can help them become resilient and motivated to achieve their goals. Setting realistic goals and modelling a growth mindset can equip kids with the necessary tools for success in school and beyond.”
“For starters, it's critical for guardians or instructors to model a growth mindset if they want to foster one in their students,” he adds.
Here are some strategies that can be used to teach and encourage children to adopt a growth mindset:

3/6

Introducing the concept of two mindsets:

According to Agrwal, “First and foremost, let them grasp the distinction between growth and fixed mindsets. Then, allow them to imagine a variety of scenarios to aid them in deciding what works best for them and how they might implement some changes.”

4/6

Recognise the effort over the outcome:

If your child made a sincere attempt to finish a difficult task in a topic that is not their favourite and the outcome wasn’t that satisfying, show your appreciation for the effort and encourage the child to never give up.

5/6

Consider the positive aspects of failure:

Talking openly about failures without stigmatising them or addressing them with contempt is a must. By examining their areas of strength and weakness and potential growth areas, you may assist them in strategizing differently.

6/6

The takeaway

“People with a fixed mindset frequently avoid taking risks by avoiding attempting new things. This is where growth is stifled and the ability to try something new or exploit untapped chances somehow decreases. A willingness to take on new challenges and an enthusiasm for learning can both be fostered by a growth mindset. The fact that this mindset takes time to develop and does not happen instantly must always be kept in mind,” says Agarwal.
