CBSE and other state-level board exams have begun

Board exams are the milestones in a student's academic journey, shaping their future educational and career paths. There is too much pressure on kids to excel in these exams as the Indian education system considers the marks obtained from these exams as the ultimate proof of one's academic success. The results of board exams can have significant implications for students, influencing college admissions and career opportunities. Unfortunately, many kids feel extremely pressured to perform in these exams. While it's normal for students to experience some level of stress during exam periods, it's essential to recognize when that stress becomes overwhelming and warrants intervention. By being vigilant and observant, parents can identify signs that their child is stressed and in need of support.

2/8

Changes in behavior

One of the most noticeable signs of stress in children is changes in behavior. Keep an eye out for alterations in their typical habits and demeanor. For instance, if your child becomes more irritable, withdrawn, or unusually quiet, it could indicate that they are struggling with stress. Conversely, some children may become more agitated or restless under stress, displaying behaviors like nail-biting or fidgeting.

3/8

Physical symptoms

Stress can manifest itself in various physical symptoms. These may include headaches, stomachaches, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, or changes in appetite. While these symptoms can also stem from other factors, if they coincide with the timing of exams and persist over time, they could be related to stress. In extreme cases, stress can lead to physical manifestations such as panic attacks or hyperventilation. If your child experiences sudden bouts of intense fear or difficulty breathing, it's crucial to seek professional help immediately.

4/8

Academic performance

While it's natural for academic performance to fluctuate during exams, a significant and sustained decline may be a cause for concern. If your child's grades are dropping, or they are struggling to concentrate or retain information, it could indicate that stress is impacting their ability to study effectively.

5/8

Perfectionist tendencies

Some children have perfectionist tendencies and place immense pressure on themselves to excel academically. While striving for excellence is admirable, it can also lead to heightened stress levels. Look out for signs of excessive self-criticism, fear of failure, or an inability to accept anything less than perfect performance.

6/8

Emotional outbursts

When faced with overwhelming stress, some children may resort to avoidance behavior as a coping mechanism. They may procrastinate, avoid studying altogether, or engage in activities that distract them from the pressure they are feeling. While this may provide temporary relief, it can exacerbate stress in the long run. Stress can sometimes manifest in the form of emotional outbursts. Your child may become more emotional, prone to crying spells, or experience mood swings that seem disproportionate to the situation at hand. These outbursts can be a sign that they are struggling to cope with their feelings of stress and anxiety.

7/8

Social withdrawal

Notice any changes in your child's social behavior. Are they spending less time with friends or withdrawing from social activities they used to enjoy? Social withdrawal can be a sign that your child is feeling overwhelmed and may benefit from additional support and reassurance from loved ones.

How to help your child cope with stress during board exams

Create a safe space for your child to express their feelings without fear of judgment. Let them know that it's okay to feel stressed and that you are there to support them.

Encourage your child to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating nutritious meals, getting regular exercise, and practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation.

Offer practical assistance, such as helping them create a study schedule, providing access to resources like tutors or study guides, and ensuring they have a quiet and comfortable place to study.

Encourage your child to take breaks and engage in activities they enjoy outside of studying. Balancing study time with relaxation and leisure activities is essential for maintaining mental well-being.

If your child's stress levels seem unmanageable or they are exhibiting severe symptoms, don't hesitate to seek help from a qualified mental health professional. They can provide valuable support and guidance tailored to your child's specific needs.
