5 simple but powerful parenting lessons from Michelle Obama

Parenting is often accompanied by many questions and queries about how best to raise kind, confident, and value-oriented children. In this regard, former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, has talked extensively about how best to raise her daughters, Malia Obama and Sasha Obama. In interviews and through lectures and her book, she has given many valuable and insightful tips for parents. Her approach to raising her daughters has been based on raising kind and confident children. The tips and lessons given by Michelle Obama have been based on her personal experiences and observations. The following are five valuable tips for parents based on Michelle Obama’s approach and perspective towards raising her daughters.

2/6

Teach children responsibility early

The first valuable tip for parents from Michelle Obama’s perspective and approach towards raising her daughters is that parents should teach their children the value of being responsible from an early age. Even though Malia and Sasha Obama were raised in the glare of public life, their mother ensured that they were given many small tasks and chores to do at home. For example, their rooms were cleaned by them, and they were also given many other small tasks and chores. Rather than shielding their daughters from all challenges and difficulties of life, their mother encouraged and motivated them to learn how to do things by themselves. This has ensured that Malia and Sasha Obama have grown into confident individuals.

3/6

Keep family time meaningful

Michelle Obama and her husband, Barack Obama, are examples of individuals with busy schedules but still managed to make family time meaningful. Michelle Obama always says that family dinner was considered special time in her family. Her family always made sure to dine together at the dinner table. This was the time when they would discuss their daily activities and bond with one another. By doing this, Michelle Obama made sure that her daughters felt comfortable sharing with her and bonding with the rest of the family.

4/6

Encourage children to be independent thinkers

Another principle that Michelle Obama follows as a parent is encouraging her children to be independent thinkers. Instead of always taking her daughters’ decisions into consideration, Michelle Obama always made sure to encourage her children to think on their own. By doing this, Michelle Obama made sure that her children grew up to be confident individuals. Growing up in a world where her parents are always in the public eye, Michelle Obama made sure that her daughters understood the importance of being independent thinkers and having their own identities while still holding on to the values that are very essential in life.

5/6

Lead by example

Michelle Obama is of the firm belief that children learn a lot by observing what their parents do, rather than what they say. She has been quoted on several occasions as saying that being a role model is one of the most effective tools for parents. It could be anything, such as being kind, hardworking, or respectful towards others. Children are sure to pick up on all these by observing their parents’ behavior. And it was because of her own commitment to education, health, and community service that her daughters learned to look at life in a certain way. By being a role model, she was able to create an environment in which her daughters learned all these things naturally, without being told or forced in any way.

6/6

Support children through change and growth

Michelle Obama has been quoted on several occasions as saying that parents should support their children as they go through various phases of growth and development in their lives. When her daughters, Malia and Sasha, were growing up, she was committed to being a parent, but she also wanted them to go through their own experiences in life. Parenting, she believed, was not about controlling everything that her daughters did, but about ensuring that they were ready for the world when they were grown up. By encouraging them to make their own decisions, go through their own experiences, and become emotionally grown up, she was able to bring up her daughters in the right way.
