5 Signs your child may be struggling with depression and how you can help

Children, just like adults, have emotional highs and lows, but sometimes those shifts in mood and feelings can exceed simple sadness. While only a professional can diagnose depression, parents can watch for certain patterns that may signal a child is struggling internally. Here are five warning signs that may indicate your child is dealing with depression:-

2/6

Withdrawal from activities they once enjoyed

A sudden lack of interest in hobbies, playing, or being with friends may indicate something deeper is at issue. Kids who are struggling emotionally often stop doing things that used to bring them pleasure because they feel overwhelmed, tired, or disconnected. Create low-pressure, warm opportunities to reconnect: invite them to join you in simple activities such as drawing together, taking a walk, or baking. Forcing participation is not necessary; being present supports them.

3/6

Persistent sadness, irritability, or mood changes

Children do not always express sadness by crying. It can show up as irritability, frustration, or unexpected emotional outbursts. If these moods last for weeks and do not seem connected to a specific event, it may indicate emotional distress. Approach your child in a sensitive way. Use open-ended questions such as, "You have been seeming really upset lately. Do you want to talk about how you are feeling?" Be patient and don't dismiss their feelings even if they seem tiny to you.

4/6

Changes in sleeping or eating habits

Too much sleep, too little sleep, nightmares for no apparent reason, loss of appetite, or overeating are all possible signs that a child is in emotional distress. Stick to a regular schedule for meals and bedtime. Establish a relaxing bedtime environment, avoid screens before bedtime, and engage your child in soothing bedtime activities, such as reading or soft music.

5/6

Difficulty concentrating or drop in school performance

Emotional difficulties may lead to difficulties in concentrating, keeping things organized, or persevering at school. Speak to teachers to understand what they're noticing. Encourage your child through small and manageable tasks, being careful not to place pressure on them. Praise effort, not outcomes.

6/6

Expressing hopelessness, worry, or negative self-talk

When your child frequently says, "I'm not good at anything," "Nobody likes me," or "What's the point?", it may reflect low self-esteem or internal distress. You should reassure your child through consistent affection, positive affirmations, and quality time. Encourage them to express their feelings through drawing, journaling, or talking.
