Encourage public speaking skill in your kid

Mastering the art of public speaking is important and child psychology experts say that children have to be encouraged and given opportunities to practice public speaking from a young age. And when granted those opportunities, children gain more social awareness, a sense of responsibility and accountability, organizational skills, and more. The skills we learn from public speaking and debate impacts our everyday lives and are often the foundation of successful communication, leadership, and performance. Whether it’s in our school education career paths or personal relationships, public speaking skills have major effects and is the most important skill for students to handle a variety of contexts ranging from schools to the workplace. Niru Agarwal, Trustee, Greenwood High International School, Bangalore shares 5 reasons why public speaking skill is important for students and why schools are focusing on the same.

Personality skills are the need of the hour

Public speaking is important and perceived as a desired skill because it not only boosts personality skills, but also creates a positive environment. In today’s world, technical knowledge or degree is not the criteria for a successful professional life. It is defined by the personality and human skills of a person alongside, professional skills, all of which get a boost from public speaking abilities. Providing an opportunity to learn more about public speaking and debate assists children in a wide range of academic areas too. It challenges children to think on their feet and develop an analytical mindset toward problem-solving. Public speaking also encourages critical thinking, logic, research and other vital cognitive skills as they make their way in the world.

3/6

Develops leadership qualities

Public speaking and debate practice helps children understand the importance of standing up for what they believe in and how to speak their minds without hesitation or fear. Having that understanding is essential in developing leadership qualities in your child. Children who believe that they can lead their peers from a young age, who are confident in expressing themselves, and feel comfortable talking in front of others, often build strong governance skills early on.

4/6

Communication skills get a boost

Public speaking involves presentation preparation and planning – on the chosen subject, some relatable information or fact which strikes a chord with live audiences, which will enhance communication skills. The idea is to make an instant connect or build it up gradually. This aspect is again a critical skill which is required to build up a strong educational and professional career. It is also a form of oratory where speech is presented in a flow using all nuances like pauses, expression and emotions. This encourages fluency and expands vocabulary among students.

5/6

Enhances confidence and self-esteem

Public Speaking not only takes away anxiety and nervousness, but also boosts self-esteem and builds up confidence levels. It is important for students because these values are respected and desired as a part of workplace skills and are certain to augment their career paths as they progress in life. It also encourages students to voice their thoughts and opinions, honestly and in a transparent manner. Students who were productively engaged in learning new skills also show improvements in memory and other high-level cognitive processes.

6/6

Helps them express thoughts and ideas

A successful public speaker focuses on their own life experiences, beliefs, and understanding of the world by the technique of narration. When children are able to conduct research, planning, and writing presentations, it gives them the opportunity to express their opinions in a well-thought-out way. It also teaches them how to be assertive in their beliefs but politely and authentically, how to empathise and actively listen and learn from these experiences.

The importance of public speaking for students is paramount, thus demonstrating why it needs to be taught in schools. A huge component of public speaking is to learn how to overcome fears, learn critical thinking, broaden self-awareness, and enhance social connections, which are all vital in life. It may seem difficult at first, but the benefits far outweigh the efforts. Public speaking is a critical skill for success in any field, and developing these skills early will give students a significant advantage, concludes Niru Agarwal.
