10 things millennials grew up with that Gen Z can’t relate to

Every generation grows up with its own version of “normal,” shaped by evolving technology, lifestyle changes and cultural shifts. Millennial kids, born roughly between 1981 and 1996, grew up in a world transitioning between analogue and digital life. Gen Z, on the other hand, was raised in an era where technology was not just a tool but the foundation of everyday living. While both generations are tech-savvy and adaptive, their childhood experiences differ dramatically. Here are ten things millennial kids saw as completely normal, but Gen Z often finds unfamiliar, funny or downright strange.

2/11

Memorising phone numbers

Millennials vividly remember dial-up phones, rotary phones, busy tones and memorising important contact numbers. Gen Z finds the idea of a home landline and remembering numbers without a smartphone almost surreal.

3/11

When clicking photos were not an instant thing

Before smartphones, clicking pictures was a thoughtful process. You had 24 or 36 shots per roll and you waited days to see the results. Gen Z, used to filters and instant previews, can’t relate.

4/11

Renting DVDs and returning them on time

A trip to the video library was weekend fun. Rewinding VHS tapes, paying late fees, and praying the disc wasn’t scratched were all part of the experience. Gen Z simply streams everything.

5/11

Using Encyclopedias for homework

Millennials often turned to Britannica volumes or school libraries for projects. Gen Z has grown up with Google, Wikipedia and AI, information available in seconds.

6/11

Recording songs from radio on cassettes

Millennials mastered the art of hitting ‘Record’ at the exact right moment to avoid RJ commentary. Gen Z’s playlists are digital, unlimited and one tap away.

7/11

Sending limited SMS with limited characters

Conversations were carefully crafted because each text cost money and character limits mattered. Today’s Gen Z communicates through instant messaging, voice notes and emojis without constraints.

8/11

Sharing one computer at home

Millennials often had a single desktop in the living room, with allotted time slots for homework, games or chatting. Gen Z treats personal devices like mobiles, tablets, laptops as basic necessities.

9/11

Dedicated time for your favourite TV shows

If you missed an episode, you truly missed it. Millennials scheduled their day around favourite shows. Gen Z binge-watches on demand.

10/11

Playtime meant outdoors

Street cricket, cycle races, hide-and-seek and building imaginary worlds outdoors were core childhood memories. While Gen Z still plays, much of it has moved online—gaming consoles, virtual worlds and curated indoor entertainment.

11/11

Using paper maps and printed directions

Before GPS, navigating meant atlas books, asking strangers for directions, or painstakingly printing routes. Gen Z trusts Google Maps for everything from a café stop to a road trip.
