5 reasons why gentle parenting might not be working for some parents

5 reasons why gentle parenting might not be working for some parents

Gentle parenting—an approach rooted in empathy, respect, and emotional attunement—has become popular among modern parents seeking alternatives to traditional authoritarian methods. Yet, behind its growing appeal lies an emerging concern: the emotional toll it takes on caregivers. Recent research suggests that while gentle parenting aims to nurture emotionally intelligent children, it may also contribute to increased parental burnout, especially among mothers who are navigating societal pressures to parent “perfectly.”

Heavy emotional load

According to a 2023 study published in Frontiers in Psychology, parental burnout is a growing psychological condition marked by emotional exhaustion, detachment from one’s children, and a loss of personal efficacy in the parenting role. The study found that sustained high emotional demands, like those often present in gentle parenting—can lead to chronic stress and mental health deterioration.

“The expectation to constantly regulate one’s emotions, be endlessly patient, and respond to every meltdown with calm empathy can become unsustainable, especially when support systems are weak,” the study notes.

3/6

The pressure to be ‘Perfect’

A separate analysis from The Ohio State University found that the rise of social media parenting trends has intensified pressure on parents to maintain an idealized image—often one that aligns with gentle parenting principles. This pressure, the study concluded, significantly increases the risk of burnout.
“Parents today aren’t just trying to do well—they’re trying to be flawless,” said Sarah Schoppe-Sullivan, co-author of the study. “And that perfectionism is eroding mental health.
This “performative parenting” often leaves little room for frustration, mistakes, or emotional release, making it harder for parents to cope with real-world stressors.

4/6

Burnout Impacts Children Too

The consequences of burnout extend beyond parental well-being. A 2024 study in the journal Children found a direct correlation between parental burnout and negative child behavior. Parents experiencing high levels of emotional fatigue were more likely to resort to harsh discipline methods, despite intending to follow a gentle approach.
“When caregivers are emotionally depleted, their capacity for empathy and patience diminishes—ironically undermining the very principles of gentle parenting,” researchers concluded.

5/6

Lack of instant results can be frustrating

Whereas punitive or reward-based strategies might produce faster behavioral outcomes, gentle parenting is a long-term strategy aimed at developing emotional maturity. The slow-burn approach can frustrate parents to the point of feeling that nothing works in the short run, particularly when confronting repeated misbehavior. This misalignment between effort and apparent result can demoralize the caregivers and lead them to doubt the merit of their strategy.

6/6

Emotional inconsistency sends mixed signals

When parents are emotionally and mentally exhausted, they cannot reliably model calm and empathy. Despite good intentions, exhaustion may cause reactive or inconsistent responses—calm one second, aggravated the next. This inconsistency can confuse children and erode trust that gentle parenting seeks to build. In time, children will have difficulty figuring out boundaries or expectations, resulting in increased behavior issues and emotional tensions at home.
