Why one should not make the bed immediately after waking up

Why one should not make the bed immediately after waking up

Making the bed when waking up is typically regarded as an indicator of discipline, of being routine-driven, and of being hygienic. Most morning routines even start with it. Despite this, studies and medical experts propose that not making the bed for a brief time could be healthier than making the bed the moment one gets out of bed.

Here are five compelling reasons why one should let the bed rest prior to making it.

2/6

Heat and moisture are trapped in sheets

At night, as we sleep, the body emits heat and moisture through sweat and breathing. Mattresses, pillows, and blankets soak up everything. If the bed is made the moment we wake up, all that heat and moisture get trapped. This, subsequently, gives rise to a damp environment upon which bacteria and dust mites can multiply and spread very fast. Allowing the bed to stay open for a while allows the water to evaporate, lowering the chances of germs flourishing beneath the blankets.

3/6

Dust mites are fond of a cozy and warm environment

Dust mites are small insects that live in our beds and feed on dead skin cells. They prefer warm, moist places, and a well-made-up bed in the morning is the ideal place for mites to breed. Delays in making the bed and leaving the sheets and mattress open to sunlight and air. This will help to dry out humidity, making the bedclothes undesirable for mites to live on, lower the allergy causes, and guarantee cleaner sleeping spaces.

4/6

Fresh air keeps the bed clean

Opening a window and allowing the bed to air out for 30 to 60 minutes can be healthy. Sunlight is a natural sanitizer that kills surface bacteria and mites. Frequent airflow eliminates foul odors and dries out damp moisture. This habit clears the indoor air and leaves the sleeping area feeling cleaner at night. The aired bed also sleeps cooler and cozier when nighttime arrives again.

5/6

A peaceful morning routine

Rather than hurrying to make the bed and put on sheets, delaying bed-making provides time for a more thoughtful and relaxed beginning to the day. This brief reprieve can provide time for morning routines such as stretching, meditation, or a soothing cup of tea. Making our bed later in the morning is then a mindful task, not a hurried one. The outcome is a neater room as well as an appearance of neatness without any drawbacks to the bed's cleanliness.

6/6

Clean bedding lasts longer when it gets a chance to breathe

Trapped moisture, skin secretions and humidity are all reasons that cause musty smell, yellowing and even weardown of fabrics of our bed sheets over a period of time. This may be the after-effect of making the bed the moment we rise, not giving enough time to the linens and mattresses to breathe and purify. Tardy bed-making, may sound a bit quirky but then it promotes a cleaner and more long-lasting sleeping arrangement for a longer span.
