The surprising places snakes hide around homes during summer

As summer comes around, snakes tend to visit residential areas more often than during other times of the year. Wildlife rescuers have explained that snakes like finding cool and shady areas where they can avoid the heat and look for food sources. Interestingly, there are a few common snake hiding spots near residential areas that seem harmless but are actually preferred by snakes during hotter months. Since snakes usually try to keep their distance from humans and do not like being disturbed, knowing snake hiding spots helps homeowners be aware of potential dangers and avoid panicking when snakes get too close to the house.

2/8

Piled-up wood, unused bricks, and roofing materials

Piled up wood, unused bricks, roofing sheets, and other building materials often form perfect hiding spots for snakes during summertime. This happens since such spaces usually do not get disturbed and provide adequate coverage from the sun. Snakes may find small animals that tend to live there, such as mice or insects, to be potential food. Therefore, it would be wise to organise the outdoor storage space and refrain from leaving any construction materials unused for an extended period.

3/8

Overgrown garden area

Vegetation, especially bushes, trees, and flower beds, provides sufficient coverage, moisture, and cooling on hot summer days. Thus, snake experts state that snakes like travelling through gardens without alarming anyone and look for potential preys such as insects, frogs, and rodents. Places around pots, flower arrangements, and other garden decorations are usually frequented by smaller species of snakes, which makes the garden a potential snake hideout during the summertime.

4/8

Spaces near water tanks, drains, and bathrooms

During exceptionally hot days, snakes are attracted to the cooler and damp places. Such places include spaces near outdoor water tanks and pipes, leaky drains, and unused bathrooms. Experts note that moisture is associated with an increased number of frogs, bugs, and rodents, which, in their turn, serve as the main food source for many snakes. It is important to repair the leaks as soon as possible and clean all areas near water tanks to remove potential attractions for snakes.

5/8

Beneath automobiles and furniture

Sometimes, snakes may hide under a car or scooter during particularly hot summer afternoons to find some shade to rest. These shaded areas do not attract much attention and thus become a convenient place for resting for many snakes. Rescue services regularly report finding snakes underneath vehicles, furniture pieces, or storage cabinets in rural and semi-urban settings. Checking these places carefully before disturbing them is always necessary when moving things outdoors.

6/8

Storage rooms and garages

Dark, silent, and rarely visited rooms are potential snake shelters since there are plenty of hiding places created with boxes, bags, clothes, or any unused household items. Moreover, many rodents inhabit these rooms, which creates additional attraction for snakes. According to wildlife experts, keeping the room clean and well lit would greatly reduce the number of reptiles that decide to stay in the room for a couple of days.

7/8

Nearby food sources

Although less popular, snake visits are often associated with rodents' activity, which is attracted by various food sources. Pet food bowls, garbage, and leftover grain are great for rodents, and thus, snakes come closer to the residence following their instinctive urges. It is known that controlling rodents' activity is one of the best ways to prevent snake appearance near the house during warm days.
