Simple steps to maintain wooden furniture at home

Wooden furniture adds beauty, warmth and character to any home. But without proper care, it can lose its luster - get scratches, stains, warping, or even structural damage. With a few simple steps and regular attention, you can keep your wooden pieces looking great and lasting for many years. Here are some simple steps to maintain wooden furniture at home:

2/6

Dust and clean regularly

Use a soft, lint-free or microfiber cloth to dust your furniture one or two times a week. For deeper cleaning, use a lightly damp cloth (not wet), mild soap if necessary. Immediately wipe dry to prevent water damage. Regular dusting also removes allergens and preserves the natural glow. A clean surface also prevents scratches due to accumulated dirt particles.

3/6

Protect from sunlight and heat

Don't put wooden furniture near direct sunlight or heaters (radiators, powerful lamps). UV rays and heat dry out the wood, crack or warp it, and cause fading of the finish. Occasional rearranging of furniture also prevents uneven fading. Curtains or blinds can provide protection from strong sunlight.

4/6

Control humidity and moisture

Wood reacts to air humidity - excessive moisture can make wood swell, lack of it can lead to cracks. Maintain relative indoor humidity stability by using humidifiers or dehumidifiers if necessary. Don't position wooden furniture in humid spaces like bathrooms or balconies. Protecting wooden pieces with covers during monsoons also adds longevity.

5/6

Use coasters, mats, and pads

Shield surfaces by putting coasters under glasses, mats under hot dishes, felt pads under decorations or on furniture legs. These stop heat rings, water stains, and scratching from shifting objects. Little actions like these work wonders in keeping polish. They also make your furniture more practical without compromising on elegance.

6/6

Polish, wax and fix small damages

Apply a quality wood polish or wax (suited to your furniture's finish) every few months to restore shine and protective finish. For minor scratches or dents, apply touch-up kits or colour-matched markers. Immediate repair of damage stops it from spreading. Regular polishing also brings out the natural grain and maintains furniture as good as new.
