Keep your home cool this summer without an AC: 5 budget-friendly roof-cooling hacks under ₹1,000 that can help beat the heat naturally

As the temperatures in many regions of India keep rising during summer, it has become crucial to maintain an ideal indoor environment while reducing dependence on air conditioners to keep homes cool. The roof, being the primary collector of heat from the sun, makes indoor spaces quite warm during the day. Fortunately, there are various cheap techniques that can help to keep indoor temperatures comfortable during the sweltering summer months. There are many affordable measures that cost very little, sometimes less than Rs 1,000. Five easy ways to cool your roof include:

2/6

Paint the roof with a light-coloured coating

One of the easiest yet effective ways to minimize heat accumulation in your house is painting your roof with a reflective whitish colour or lime wash. Dark colors easily soak in sunlight, whereas light colours such as white reflect much of the incoming solar radiation. Experts state that even a simple lime coating can significantly reduce roof temperatures during summer afternoons. Homeowners usually prefer this approach since it is inexpensive and does not need much effort to implement.

3/6

Use a green shade net over the roof

The use of a green shade net as cover for the roof helps protect the roof by shading out much of the incoming solar radiation. These nets are mainly used in gardens, but they work just as well for roof protection against heat. They help reduce roof heat levels by preventing sun rays from directly striking the roof surface. Experts advise homeowners to leave a bit of space between the net and the roof to enhance airflow around the roof.

4/6

Grow some potted plants on the rooftop

Another way of minimizing roof heat is growing some potted plants on the roof to reduce the amount of heat accumulated. Plants have an innate mechanism of removing heat through transpiration that allows them to release moisture from their leaves, thereby cooling the immediate environment. Potted plants also help shield exposed roof materials from absorbing much heat. Larger pots of heat-resistant plants can be strategically placed in sun-exposed regions of the roof.

5/6

Pour water on the roof during the afternoon

Pouring water onto the roof during the hot afternoon can help reduce the heat collected during the day. This is due to evaporation that cools down surfaces covered by the water. Experts suggest pouring the water on the roof during the hottest part of the day when there is maximum exposure to sunlight. The evaporation effect works efficiently in dissipating some of the heat collected by the roof.

6/6

Cover the roof using jute bags or bamboo mats

These inexpensive traditional insulators can be laid across sections of the roof to help shade out sun rays and reduce heat transfer into the room below. Some individuals prefer dampening their jute sacks slightly to take advantage of the cooling effect from evaporation. Experts advise people to use these cooling methods as an inexpensive means of reducing roof temperature since they are readily available.
