Best ways to mole- and rat-proof your home and garden

Unwanted pests like moles and rats can quickly turn a peaceful home and garden into a frustrating space. While moles damage lawns by tunnelling underground, rats pose hygiene risks and can invade living areas in search of food and shelter. The key to dealing with both is prevention, creating an environment that is less inviting and harder to access. Instead of relying only on quick fixes, consistent maintenance and smart habits can make a lasting difference. Here are five effective ways to protect your home and garden from moles and rats.

2/6

Keep your garden clean and tidy

A dirty and poorly maintained garden becomes ideal conditions for pests. Piles of leaves, untrimmed vegetation, and other waste attract rats and moles. Therefore, regular pruning of plants and cleaning of the garden are effective preventative measures. Moreover, a clean garden is a beautiful garden that will make you enjoy being there more often.

3/6

Manage the presence of food sources properly

Rodents find food especially attractive when they can easily get it. If there is a lot of garbage lying in garbage bins or the owners do not bother to store the food properly, it becomes an obvious lure for pests. To avoid this, it is necessary to secure your garbage bins and keep all the food in tight containers. In the garden, fallen fruits should be gathered on time, and the pets' food should be limited.

4/6

Block potential entry points for pests

The existence of cracks and small holes can become a real threat to homeowners because pests can enter homes through these gaps. All the entry points need to be sealed in order to increase safety. Additionally, installation of door sweeps and fixing of vents, screens and windows will provide additional protection. In case of moles, a barrier should be created in the soil to restrict the area where they may dig.

5/6

Maintain proper soil and lawn conditions

Moles love digging because loose and fertile soil attracts lots of insects on which these pests feed. Therefore, aerating the soil and limiting irrigation are important factors that influence the attractiveness of the garden. Regular lawn mowing is a good practice as well because moles cannot dig on a compact surface.

6/6

Apply appropriate deterrents and monitor the condition

There are many natural methods for driving away pests without hurting them. Nevertheless, you should use these methods regularly and constantly monitor your property to identify the problem as soon as possible.
