7 smart ways to keep your home cool during heatwaves

Heatwaves are common occurrences globally, and this has made it challenging to ensure comfort within homes. High temperatures are not only unbearable but also make homes hot places to be, especially when one does not have air conditioning at home. However, there are various effective ways of keeping homes cool during heatwaves without completely relying on air conditioners. From ventilation to blocking sunlight, there are various effective measures that can be taken to ensure that the temperature within homes is as low as possible. Here are seven effective ways of keeping homes cool during heatwaves.

2/8

Improve natural ventilation

Having enough airflow is one of the most efficient ways to ensure that the environment inside the home remains cool during extremely hot weather. For instance, one can open the windows at both ends of the house to create cross-ventilation, which helps to circulate fresh air inside the rooms. In addition, one can open the doors inside the home to allow the fresh air to circulate throughout the home.

3/8

Open windows at the right time

Timing plays an important role in using windows for cooling. Windows should be opened in the early morning or in the evening when the outside temperature is low. When the sun is at its peak in the day, windows should not be opened to allow warm air into the house. This technique helps to hold the cold air from the previous night and keeps the house at a stable temperature.

4/8

Use curtains, blinds, or shades

Also, if there is direct sunlight coming in through windows, this will increase temperature. Closing curtains or shades will prevent this sunlight from coming into the home. Light-colored shades are best for this. They will reflect the sunlight instead of absorbing it. This is one quick solution for maintaining a cool temperature during a heatwave.

5/8

Create shade around the house

Adding natural or artificial shade can greatly reduce the amount of heat that enters your home. Adding trees, shrubs, or climbing plants around the walls and windows will block direct sunlight, thus keeping the surfaces cooler. Plants also release moisture into the air, which can slightly reduce the temperature, making the environment more pleasant.

6/8

Use fans to circulate air

They do not decrease the actual temperature in a room, but they do circulate the air and provide a wind chill effect that makes people feel cooler. A ceiling fan or a portable fan can circulate the air in a room. Ceiling fans should rotate counterclockwise in summer to push air downward and create a cooling effect.

7/8

Reduce heat from appliances

Many household appliances such as ovens, TVs, computers, and incandescent bulbs produce heat when they are functioning. The use of these appliances during the peak hours of the day should be restricted to avoid excessive heat build-up inside the house. Preparing meals earlier in the morning or later in the evening and using energy-efficient bulbs will help maintain a cool temperature inside the house.

8/8

Improve insulation and reflect heat

Good insulation helps in the creation of a barrier that keeps outside heat out of the home. Insulation of areas such as the attic and the walls helps in maintaining a constant temperature inside the home, even during extremely hot conditions. Furthermore, the use of reflective coatings or lighter shades of paint can help in reflecting heat, thus cooling the roofs and the walls, and hence increasing comfort inside the home.

Homeowners do not have to spend a lot of money to cool their homes during a heatwave. There are several steps that can help in cooling homes. For instance, homeowners can improve ventilation, prevent direct sun rays, minimize heat inside the home, and create shade. All these steps can help in cooling homes and thus create a healthy environment.
