6 quick blooming flowers to sow in April

April is often a practical sowing window for fast-growing annual flowers, especially in gardens where the soil has started to warm and the risk of hard frost is passing. The hardy annuals are commonly sown from late March to May. These flowers are a smart choice for gardeners who want visible results without a long wait. Many of them can be sown straight into the soil, which makes them simple, affordable, and ideal for borders, beds, and containers. Here are six plants that can be sown in April:

2/7

Alyssum

Alyssum is one of the easiest quick-bloom flowers to grow from seed in April. Varieties such as ‘Royal Carpet’ and ‘Carpet of Snow’ take about 60 days to flower, and it is recommended to sow directly after the weather warms. It stays low and compact, so it works beautifully along edges, in containers, and around taller flowering plants.

3/7

Calendula

Calendula, also called pot marigold, is a cheerful cool-season flower that can reward spring sowing with quick colour. Calendula should be directly sown after the weather warms. It is especially useful if you want bright flowers that also handle less-than-perfect soil.

4/7

Marigold

Marigolds are classic fast bloomers and one of the safest choices for beginners. Directly sown marigolds can bloom in about eight weeks, and its quick-blooming group includes varieties such as ‘Strawberry Blonde’ and ‘Happy Days’. They love the sun and warmth, which makes April an excellent time to start them in many gardens.

5/7

Nasturtium

Nasturtium brings both colour and personality to a garden. Nasturtium’s seedlings emerge in 10 to 14 days, and several varieties bloom in about 50 to 70 days. It grows well in full sun, and the flowers are also edible, which adds extra charm.

6/7

Sunflower

Sunflowers are among the most satisfying quick-bloom flowers to sow in April, especially if you choose fast-maturing varieties. It is recommended to sow them outdoors after the weather warms, since sunflowers prefer to grow where they are planted.

7/7

Zinnia

Zinnias are excellent for rapid summer colour, and they are especially rewarding when directly sown after the weather warms. Zinnias can be sown outdoors after frost. They also continue flowering for a long season once established.

April is a fine month to sow quick-bloom flowers if you want fast colour with relatively little effort. Alyssum, calendula, marigold, nasturtium, sunflower, and zinnia all offer a good mix of speed, ease, and seasonal appeal. With sun, decent soil, and regular care, these flowers can turn a quiet bed into a bright display in a short time.
