Here are ten easy vegetables that are perfect for beginners

Not everyone has the luxury of a backyard, but that doesn’t mean you can’t grow your own fresh vegetables. Whether you live in a small apartment, a flat with a balcony, or a house with just a sunny windowsill, you’d be surprised at how many veggies you can grow in containers. The key is choosing the right plants and giving them just a little attention every day. Here are ten easy vegetables that are perfect for beginner gardeners, no fancy tools, green thumbs, or backyard required.

2/11

Tomatoes

Cherry tomatoes are one of the easiest and most rewarding crops to grow in pots. All they need is a sunny spot and a deep container to stretch their roots. You’ll need to water them daily in the summer and give them a stake or trellis to climb. In a few weeks, you’ll be plucking juicy tomatoes right from your window.

3/11

Lettuce

Lettuce grows quickly and doesn’t need much space at all. You can grow it in shallow trays, and it’ll thrive on your kitchen counter or balcony. Even better, you can snip off a few leaves at a time, and the plant will keep producing. It’s one of the easiest ways to have fresh salad greens on hand.

4/11

Spinach

Spinach loves cool weather, so it’s great for spring or fall planting. It doesn’t mind a bit of shade and grows well in containers. Sow the seeds thickly and water regularly. You’ll be surprised how quickly it fills out. Pick the outer leaves and let the center grow for continuous harvests.

5/11

Green onions

Green onions, or spring onions, are a beginner’s dream. You can grow them from seeds or even regrow them from kitchen scraps. Just put the white root ends in water and watch them sprout. Once they’ve got some growth, plant them in soil, and you’ll have an endless supply.

6/11

Radishes

If you’re the impatient type, radishes are perfect. They grow super fast sometimes in just three to four weeks and they’re not fussy. A sunny windowsill or balcony container will do just fine. Plus, both the roots and leafy tops are edible.

7/11

Carrots

You don’t need deep garden beds for carrots. Just choose a pot that’s at least 12 inches deep and fill it with loose, sandy soil. Baby carrots grow particularly well in containers. Keep them watered and wait patiently carrots take a little longer, but pulling them out is a fun reward.

8/11

Chilies

Chili plants love warm, sunny spots and grow really well in pots. They don’t need a lot of space but they do enjoy regular watering and a little fertilizer now and then. Once they grow you’ll have fresh chilies to spice up your meals for months.

9/11

Beans

Climbing beans or bush beans are surprisingly container-friendly. Just make sure to give them something to climb a stick, a trellis, or even a railing. They grow quickly and don’t need much attention once they get going. Bonus: they also fix nitrogen in the soil, which is great for nearby plants.

10/11

Peas

Like beans, peas are great for vertical gardening. They enjoy cooler weather, so try planting them in early spring or fall. They don’t need much space, and their delicate tendrils will climb whatever support you give them. The taste of homegrown peas is far better than anything from a store.

11/11

Herbs

Okay, technically not vegetables, but herbs like basil, coriander, mint, and parsley are some of the easiest things to grow indoors. They thrive on windowsills and require very little effort. Fresh herbs can completely change the flavor of your cooking, and they look beautiful too.
