Why Sadhguru says one must rub the palms first thing after waking up

To get our mornings right is half the battle won when it comes to a long, tiring day ahead. Whether it is getting up on time, having a power packed breakfast, getting in some exercise or just soaking in some sunlight, happy mornings help you be productive at work or at home. However, apart from your regular morning routine, you should do this one thing after getting up, according to Sadhuguru - here's why...

2/6

Refreshes and wakes you up

According to Sadhguru, one should rub their palms immediately after waking up. He explains that rubbing your palms together immediately activates your nervous system. Your hands have a heavy concentration of nerve endings, and when you rub them, it sends signals to your brain and body to wake up, after a long slumber. This helps you shake off sleepiness quickly and feel alert. If you ever feel groggy in the morning, just rubbing your hands can help.

3/6

Stimulates your senses

After rubbing your hands, Sadhguru suggests placing your palms over your eyes. This warms and stimulates the nerves connected to your eyes and other senses. It helps your eyes adjust to light and prepares your senses for the day ahead. This gentle stimulation is a natural way to refresh your vision and sensory awareness, without any harsh movements.

4/6

Prepares your body for the day ahead

Getting out of bed suddenly (especially with an alarm) can cause a shock to your system, especially to your heart and metabolism. Sadhguru advises that before you move your body, your brain and body should be active and alert. Rubbing your hands helps gently wake up your system so that it does not go into shock mode. It’s a mindful way to prepare your body for movement and activity ahead.

5/6

Why one should do it?

This practice of rubbing hands and placing them over the eyes is part of yogic science. It’s an easy and quick way to boost your energy and focus every morning. Instead of rushing out of bed, this small ritual helps you start your day with calmness and clarity.

6/6

How to do it?

After waking up, keep your hands close together and rub your palms vigorously for about 20 to 30 seconds until they feel warm. Then gently cup your warm palms over your closed eyes. Breathe deeply and feel the warmth and energy spreading through your eyes and face. Repeat if you feel like it.
