Post-Diwali weight loss tips from expert

Diwali isn’t just a festival of lights and sweets but also of celebrations and, most of the time, extra weight gain, plus the late-night parties, rich food and sugar consumption. So, post-Diwali weight gain is a physiological process rather than just anecdotal. However, the great thing is that it can be reversed easily and in an eco-friendly manner, provided one takes the right measures and is aware of the issue, says Dr. Pratayksha Bhardwaj, World Record Holder, Dietician & Weight Management Expert.

2/9

Why weight gain happens after Diwali

To begin with, let’s go through the mechanics. The continuous consumption of fried snacks, sweets, and calorie-laden treats results in excess calorie intake. Surplus energy, when supplied to the body, is stored as fat. Now, moreover, the disturbed sleep and the late-night eating have a direct negative effect on the metabolic hormones such as insulin, leptin, and cortisol, thus making weight loss a difficult task, to say the least.

3/9

Rebalance your meals

Opt for high-protein, fibre-rich, whole-food foods. Lentils, legumes, sprouts, vegetables, and oats are the ones you should turn to. Lean dairy is a bonus. Protein stops muscle breakdown while fibre satiates appetite and delays digestion. Therefore, in place of the usual processed snack, you can have roasted nuts, fruit chaat minus syrup, or gram flour namkeen.

4/9

Reestablish controlled eating windows

The festive season typically leads to the disruption of one's meal timings. Resume taking your meals at regular times again, ideally three meals and a small snack between two major meals and a 2-3 hour gap before sleep. This ensures that your body has sufficient time to digest food and the insulin spikes are kept to a minimum.

5/9

Hydrate + detox naturally

Drinking a lot of water, 2.5-3 litres daily, will help you to eliminate excess salt and sugar from your body. In the morning, warm water with lemon and a pinch of rock salt would be good for digestion.
In addition, herbs used in detoxification, such as mint, coriander, and fennel, may be included in teas or broths.

6/9

Move your body

You don't need to exercise strenuously. A 30-minute brisk walk, yoga, or light cardio will suffice to stimulate the metabolism of fat. Just before and after meals, it is advisable to sneak in some movement, stretch, walk indoors or outside, or even dance for fun.

7/9

Rebalance sleep & stress

Sleep and stress are so much neglected but so very strong. Attempt to have 7 hours of undisturbed sleep. Avoid screens before sleeping. Practice such activities as deep breathing, journaling gratitude, or reading to make your cortisol levels better and for calm recovery.

8/9

One-day reset menu

Morning – Warm lemon water with chia seeds
Breakfast – Oat bowl with sprouts, chopped nuts, and seasonal fruit
Mid-morning – Green tea or infused water
Lunch – Mixed vegetable sabzi + millet roti + dal
Evening Snack – Unsweetened yoghurt + cucumber or a small handful of nuts
Dinner (early) – Soup or stir-fry with veggies and tofu
Bedtime – Herbal tea (e.g., chamomile)

9/9

Conclusion

Diwali weight gain is indeed real, but it does not have to last. The remedy is methodical recovery, not the extreme way of dieting. Reset your body by introducing balance again: whole foods, regular exercise, good quality sleep, and water. Hitting back to your routine does not mean the use of powerful solutions; it is about mindful consistency.
Celebrate wisely. Get your balance back. Let the lights of Diwali guide your health, not your scales.
