Perils of using weight loss apps

The widespread adoption of emerging digital technologies has transformed our lives in many ways, and even the health and fitness industry is not untouched by it. Whether you have to monitor your heart rate or track your diet plan, you can get all the updates on your cellphone at the touch of a button. There are several apps available at present that can track your fitness and diet routine, making the entire process hassle-free for you. But like every other thing these apps also have their share of pros and cons. On the surface, you may not realise what harm it is causing you, but it can have a long term impact on your health. Here is what may happen if you depend on your apps for too long.

2/4

It may lead to an eating disorder

The diet and fitness apps are quite rigid. The technology focuses heavily on quantification. Following it religiously for a long time may lead to negative consequences like fixation on numbers, rigid diet and negative thoughts. In such a case, if you are already suffering from the problem of an eating disorder, the app may trigger and exacerbate symptoms. While for others it may give rise to the problem of an eating disorder. The agenda of your dieting and weight loss plan should include more healthy and nutritious food and to stay motivated sometimes it is good to twist the rules. Being too rigid on your eating habit and cutting food groups can pave a way for eating problems like excessive eating.

3/4

App dependency

Using the app for tracking every single movement may mess up with your mental health. The point and rewards they offer for sticking to the diet or burning a certain amount of calories may lead to obsession. Many apps allow the user to eat their favorite meal or skip exercising when they get some points or reach a level. This reward-based system may backfire as you may do things only for the sake of reward and forget the entire motive of dieting and exercising. If by any chance you do not finish the level or are not able to burn the desired number of calories in a day you may even feel anxious or develop negative emotions, which can harm your mental well-being.

You forget when to stop

Before starting the journey, we all have a fixed goal in our minds. The same is with weight loss. But sometimes during the entire process, you need to stop for a while, evaluate your health condition and then proceed further. When using the app, you may get engrossed in the process and may forget when to stop. You may not realise if the app is not helping you or you have lost more weight than you planned to or the diet you are following has led to some other health concerns. It may further deteriorate your condition.
