Top neuroscientist say ‘avoid all B12 supplements for the brain’, and the reason will shock you!

Maintaining brain health is a growing concern as we age, and nutrition plays a crucial role in keeping our minds. Neuroscientist Robert Love has spent years studying how the brain ages and what it needs to stay sharp. His research focuses on preventing Alzheimer’s disease with solid science. One topic he discusses often is Vitamin B12. Instead of recommending B12 supplements alone, he urges people to focus on the entire group of B vitamins. His message is simple: The brain does not run on B12 alone and relying on only one nutrient can leave important brain systems unsupported.

2/6

Why B12 matters for brain function

Vitamin B12 plays a crucial role in keeping nerve cells healthy. It supports red blood cell formation and helps maintain energy levels. People who are deficient in B12 often experience fatigue, brain fog and memory issues. Vegans are especially vulnerable because plants do not naturally provide B12. Apart from nutritional yeast, plant based diets cannot meet the requirement. This is why supplements or animal products are often needed.

Despite this, Robert Love warns that taking only B12 is not enough for long term brain health. He explains that the brain needs B6, B9, niacin and other B vitamins along with B12. These vitamins do not work independently. They support each other and complete important biochemical processes together.

3/6

B vitamins work together to make neurotransmitters

One of the biggest reasons Robert Love discourages isolated B12 supplements is neurotransmitter production. Neurotransmitters are the tiny chemical signals that allow brain cells to communicate. They influence mood, memory, attention and overall mental clarity. B vitamins play key roles in creating these neurotransmitters. If you take only B12, the production process remains incomplete. The brain does not get all the raw materials it needs which can lead to low energy and poor cognitive performance.

B Vitamins help lower homocysteine levels

Another major reason for avoiding only B12 supplements is the effect on homocysteine. Homocysteine is a compound produced inside the body. When its levels rise too high, it can damage blood vessels and harm the brain. High homocysteine has been linked to memory loss and a higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease. B6, B9 and B12 work together to bring these levels down. If someone takes only B12, two essential vitamins are missing from the process. This can leave the brain more vulnerable.

Not all B12 supplements are equal

Robert Love also points out that many people purchase low quality B12 supplements without realising that these forms may not be well absorbed. He recommends methylated B12 which is called methylcobalamin. This form is already activated and easier for the brain to use. However, even the best form of B12 cannot replace the full set of B vitamins. The body performs best when it has a balanced supply of all required nutrients.

For these reasons, Robert Love encourages people to choose a full B complex supplement rather than B12 alone. A complete B complex includes all essential B vitamins in a balanced ratio. This supports neurotransmitter production, protects the brain from homocysteine related damage and keeps energy levels steady. It also avoids nutrient imbalances which can occur when one vitamin is taken in isolation.

6/6

Choosing the right supplement

When choosing a supplement, he advises looking for brands that are transparent about their quality testing. Third party testing means that an independent laboratory has confirmed the purity and potency of the product. Thorne is one brand he often recommends because of its strong reputation for quality. However, he also explains that any brand can work well as long as it is methylated and third party tested.
