Using F word a lot? Here's why this habit may be DANGEROUS!

Using F word a lot? Here's what this habit can do to you!

The dynamics of language are seeing a sea change. Our universal language is changing and be it surprise, hoots, anger or sudden pain of hitting your toe in the doors, a F- Yeah, or dammit slip like sand from fingers. The cathartic impact of abuse is surely to blame behind this. But science says that the more you put these words to use, the lesser their impact gets (a normal decreasing utility concept, isn't it?). However, the F word has become so common that it is used wherever one wants to use emphasis. And this commonplace use is what precisely gives it validation. In fact, today when you abuse, others might not even feel offended, especially when it’s to your friends. But, we can't help but wonder what impact cursing has on our minds. Here we try some science to get at it.

2/6

Is it a way of letting out frustration?

IS IT A WAY OF LETTING OUT FRUSTRATION? A lot of times when we use the dirty words against others, it might be an indication of our frustration level. Abusing or cursing is a unique way to express our anger, desperation or even defeat. This may be still a taboo and certainly considered as a breach of social etiquette.

What studies say

WHAT STUDIES SAY: A study about swearing and pain was conducted on women who were coping with breast cancer or rheumatoid arthritis. They wore recorders and their usage of curse words among friends and family was noted. It found out that women who cursed, even those who uttered relatively mild bad-language, received less support from their loved ones. Researchers also found out that these women were not using the bad words against their family, still, the family support was less.

The role of your brain

THE ROLE OF YOUR BRAIN: Researchers at Weill Medical College of Cornell University studied brain to understand how cursing reverberates inside the complicated wiring of our minds. They found the amygdala, which is responsible for reflecting our emotions and memory, was highly active when exposed to swear words.

5/6

You may not even realize it

YOU MAY NOT EVEN REALIZE IT: Cursing has become a natural part of human speech development. Studies show that if you grew up hearing your elder siblings using curse words, the likelihood is that you get adapted to it and these words may not shock you when used by others. It means that the emotional potency of the curse is weakened as it's used more and more.

6/6

Find out alternatives

FIND OUT ALTERNATIVES: Though cursing and using the F word may seem like the new norm, studies point out that these new developments in linguistics isn't a very favorable welcome. Instead of swearing, if you want to let out your frustration, anger or defeat, find out other ways that may not harm others, if it does, and is good for your own mental health.
