Having a bad mood? 8 signs that tell you it is something serious

Do you always seem to have a bad mood and often wonder what could be the reason? While mood disorders are often associated with mental health and sleep disorders, in many cases, medical problems can also interfere with your mood and cause you trouble. Here are some pointers to help you diagnose your 'bad mood syndrome' better:

2/10

Warning signs to look out for

Experiencing a bad day might not always be the reason for it, but if you experience these signs of trouble, you might be suffering from a mood disorder.

3/10

Chronic pain

Chronic pain is associated with lack of comfort and to battle that, patients are given strong medications and painkillers which have been known to cause irritability and mood fluctuations. This can isolate the person and trigger loneliness and even lead to a mental breakdown.

4/10

Onstage diabetes

Surprisingly, even an early stage of diabetes can trigger your emotions. An imbalance in sugar levels can cause a mismatch in the serotonin levels, the brain chemical which has a direct influence on emotions. In extreme cases, high or low blood sugar levels can cause anxiety, mental breakdown and rage.

5/10

Vitamin D deficiency

If you haven’t been getting enough sunshine, it might make you feel irritable and grumpy. Hence, Vitamin D is very vital not just for good health but battling mood swings as well. Also, staying up till odd hours can interfere with the natural circadian rhythm and that is the reason you wake up with a slouch on your face!

6/10

PMDD

No, it’s not just PMS causing you trouble with your emotions every month. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder or PMDD can make women feel extremely agitated and irritable and make it difficult to carry on with your work in everyday situations. Although a menstrual cycle is linked to fluctuating hormones and considered normal, a situation as severe as PMDD requires medication and lifestyle modifications to ease out the symptoms.

7/10

Thyroid

Having a high thyroid level can have dangerous implications. In fact, one of the most common symptoms of an overactive or hyperthyroid is fluctuating mood swings. Thyroid, an important hormone can affect everything and make it difficult to concentrate and make you restless. Hence, you end up having your emotions on the edge on most days.

8/10

Lack of exercise

Yes! If you aren’t moving enough, it’s not just the body which suffers but your mood can go for a spin too. Exercise induces ‘happy hormones’ which can lower down levels of depression, anxiety and make you feel good. Even a 10-minute walk can actually clear your mood and change your bad mood!

9/10

Stroke

Having a stroke can change the brain’s functioning as the frontal lobe and the right lobe provide mixed signals and make it difficult for information and emotions to be perceived in the right way. Hence, in such a situation, a bad mood or extreme rage is triggered. If you experience this, you should consult your doctor.

10/10

Allergies

As disturbing and annoying common allergies are, there are some pollens and environmental allergies which can actually cause your mood to fluctuate. Side effects like sleep disruptions or staying gluten-free can also cause depression, studies have shown. They can also take a toll on your immunity, which tends to make you feel down at all times.
