Mandira Bedi says she hates doing squats - 5 reasons you can skip them (and what to do instead)

When it comes to fitness, squats are said to be a miracle exercise that strengthens lower body muscles and improves bone density. While this is also true, not everyone likes doing squats or might find it cumbersome. Recently actress Mandira Bedi, known for her toned physique at 53, openly admitted she hates squats, especially weighted ones. The good news is, you don’t have to force yourself to do exercises you dislike to stay fit. Instead, focusing on classic, time-tested exercises can be just as effective - and more enjoyable. Here's how...

2/6

Why it is okay to skip squats

Squats are great for strengthening your lower body and improving overall fitness. However, if they cause discomfort, no need to force yourself. Mandira Bedi’s fitness philosophy highlights the importance of finding workouts that suit you and sticking to them consistently. The key is to keep moving every day, even if it’s not with the exercises everyone talks about.

3/6

Classic exercises to the rescue

Classic exercises like stretching, yoga, push-ups, lunges, and planks have stood the test of time because they work, and almost everyone can do them. They help build strength, flexibility, and endurance without the need for complicated or trendy moves. Mandira Bedi prefers a “classic” approach, (As told to Elle India) focusing on stretching and yoga to increase flexibility and maintain a toned body.

4/6

Benefits of classic exercises

The benefits of classic exercises are manifold. They don't require fancy equipment or gym memberships. You can do them anywhere, anytime. Exercises like push-ups and lunges target multiple muscle groups, improving overall body strength and stability. Stretching and yoga help keep your muscles flexible and joints healthy, reducing pain and stiffness. Because they are simple and adaptable, classic exercises are easier to stick with long term. You can mix them up to avoid monotony.

5/6

Say no to fads

Fads come and go, but sticking to the basics yields results in the long run. Mandira says she does not chase “weird fitness trends” and encourages sticking to routines that one is comfortable with. Many fad exercises lack scientific backing, and can lead to burnout or injury since they give 'quick fixes' instead of long-term results.

6/6

What you can do instead

Whether it comes to exercise, there are many options. Choose from dancing, swimming, walking, running etc - simply moving your body is important. Combine classic exercises like push-ups, planks, and lunges with stretching or Pilates to keep workouts interesting (and fruitful) Even 10-15 minutes of activity every day counts. Avoid exercises that cause too much pain or discomfort. At the end of the day, consistency is important.
