Beyond hydration and fiber: This one juice can help cleanse colon naturally

More water and more fiber are some of the cornerstones that help maintain colon health. Sometimes, however, the gut needs a little extra help. Nutrition science and modern research increasingly support the effectiveness of a humble fruit’s juice in helping the colon work more efficiently and stay cleaner. The drink in question is prune juice. Prune juice combines several natural compounds that make stools softer, increase bowel frequency, and support a healthier transit through the colon.
Note: Prune juice isn’t a magic remedy. Other lifestyle factors play an important role in maintaining colon health.

What research shows

A controlled study, published in NIH, reported a significant decrease in hard or lumpy stools and an increase in normal stools. The study also showed improvements in subjective constipation complaints.
Another clinical trial that compared dried plums and isabgol, found that prunes were at least as effective, and in some measures superior, at increasing bowel movements and improving stool consistency in people with chronic constipation. Also, the participants tolerated prunes well.
In essence, both whole prunes and prune juice are supported by clinical evidence as practical, food-based options to relieve constipation and improve stool form.

3/9

What’s there in prune juice that helps the colon?

Prunes contain a trio of active ingredients that act together, as per NIH. These are:

Sorbitol: A naturally occurring sugar alcohol that draws water into the colon, softening stool and increasing bowel movements. Studies say sorbitol is one of the primary reasons prune products have a laxative effect.

Pectin (soluble fiber): This forms a gentle gel that improves stool texture and moves it along.

Polyphenols: These are plant compounds that may stimulate gut motility and support beneficial gut bacteria.

4/9

How to prepare and how much to consume

Soak 10 to 12 pitted prunes in warm water overnight. Blend them with 2 cups of water until smooth. Strain if you prefer a lighter texture, or keep it pulpy for added fiber. Consume fresh.
Study doses vary and individual tolerance matters. A commonly recommended starting amount is about 2 ounces (60 mL) of 100% prune juice per day. Effects may begin within hours to a few days, with fuller benefits seen over weeks when used regularly.
Note: Prune juice contains natural sugars. People with diabetes or those watching carbohydrate intake should be more careful.

5/9

Who shouldn’t consume prune juice

While prune juice is generally safe for most healthy adults, it isn’t suitable for everyone. Certain medical conditions and sensitivities can make it uncomfortable or even risky. Some individuals who should ignore consuming prune juice are:
- People with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Those with sorbitol or fructose intolerance
- People with diabetes or insulin resistance
- Individuals with kidney disease or on potassium-restricted diets

6/9

Pair with other colon-friendly habits

Prune juice isn’t meant to replace the foundations of digestive health. It works best when combined with other healthy habits, such as:

Hydration: Sorbitol draws water into your intestines, so keep drinking plenty of plain water to support the process.

Fiber-rich diet. Include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to maintain long-term gut health.

Physical activity helps stimulate intestinal movement. Even a 20-minute walk can make a difference.

Prune juice: Not a magic cure

Disclaimer: This article is for informational purposes only and should not be substituted for professional advice.

While prune juice can help relieve constipation and support overall colon health, it is not a magical cure. Regular intake may aid digestion and promote bowel movement, but persistent constipation or ongoing digestive discomfort should not be ignored. It’s important to consult a healthcare professional if symptoms continue. Additionally, certain warning signs require immediate attention. Severe abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, or sudden changes in bowel habits may indicate a more serious condition. Maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and seeking timely medical advice are essential for long-term digestive and colon health.
